Where are you from, beautiful child?

Pushkin A.S.
Pushkin A.S.

Phraseologism: Where are you from, beautiful child?

Meaning: Jokingly-ironically at an unexpected meeting.

Origin: From the last scene of the drama "Mermaid" (1832) by A. S. Pushkin (1799-1837), in which the prince addresses the little mermaid with such words. The expression became popular thanks to the opera of the same name (1856) by A. S. Dargomyzhsky, written on the Pushkin story. Usually playfully-ironically at an unexpected meeting.

Random phraseology:

So it was, it will be so.

Meaning:

That it is not possible to change or there is no desire to change.

Origin:

The words of the Minister of the Interior and Chief of the Gendarmes (1911-1912) Alexander Alexandrovich Makarov (1857-1919). Answering in the State Duma (April 11, 1912) regarding the execution of workers at the Lena gold mines, he accused the workers themselves of being the first to attack a military unit, trying to disarm it: “When a crowd that has lost its mind under the influence of malicious agitators attacks army, then the army has nothing else to do but shoot. So it was and so it will be in the future." The last phrase of the minister was widely commented on by the Russian left-wing press, in which a new, polemical version of this phrase was born: "So it was, but it will not be so."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Flexible displays make smartphones unbreakable 30.03.2017

Research firm Futuresource Consulting estimates that the flexible display market will be valued at $200 billion in five years and grow to $300 billion in ten years.

In the coming years, such displays will be used by smartphone manufacturers, which, when unfolded, will turn into tablets. Analysts also believe that the technology will find application in presentation panels and TVs, which can be curved to more accurately display information in various conditions.

Futuresource Consulting believes that flexible displays will hit the market in a year or two. The devices in which they will be applied will allow displays to be repeatedly bent or rolled up without causing any harm. Surely the developers will come up with new usage scenarios for smartphones and tablets in addition to the long-familiar ones.

In the future, smartphones with flexible displays will receive a number of new features, in particular, they will be unbreakable, analysts say, adding that by 2026 more than a quarter of new smartphones will be equipped with such screens.
