Why is there a bay of Maria Pronchishcheva in Taimyr, although the explorer's name was Tatyana?

Tatyana Pronchishcheva was the first Russian explorer of the Arctic as part of the Lena-Yenisei detachment of the Great Northern Expedition of the 1730s. During the voyages, shortly after the death of her husband Vasily Pronchishchev, the head of the detachment, Tatiana also died. In 1913, one of the capes on the eastern coast of Taimyr was named after her, but the inscription "m. Pronchishcheva" was mistakenly attributed to the bay when preparing for the publication of maps, considering that "M" is the first letter of the name Maria. Subsequently, the true biography of Tatyana was restored, but to this day the bay of Maria Pronchishcheva is listed on the maps.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What is the difference in time between the most extreme time zones?

It is logical to assume that the time difference between the westernmost time zone from Greenwich and the easternmost one is 24 hours. However, in addition to the UTC +12 zone, there are also UTC +13 (in the Kingdom of Tonga) and UTC +14 (in the Line Islands belonging to the state of Kiribati), which makes this difference equal to 26 hours. This is due to the fact that on the islands that previously belonged to Great Britain, time was added from the Australian, and on the islands that belonged to the United States, they were subtracted from the continental American. Therefore, a paradoxical situation has arisen: the Line Islands are located 10-20 ° east of American Samoa, but the time difference between them is 25 hours.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Dogs can detect heat radiation 06.03.2020

Dog noses are even more amazing than previously known, according to a new study. They are not only millions of times more sensitive than human ones, but they are also able to capture even weak thermal radiation, in particular, the body heat of a mammalian prey. This discovery helps explain how dogs that are visually or hearing impaired can hunt quite successfully.

It is worth explaining that the ability to detect weak radiant heat is found in very few animals: black fire bugs, some types of snakes, and the common vampire bat.

Most mammals have exposed, smooth skin at the tips of their noses around the nostrils, an area called the rhinaria. But the dog's rhinaria is damp and somewhat colder than the ambient temperature, and abundantly endowed with nerves - all of which suggests the ability to detect not only smell, but also heat.

To test this idea, researchers from Lund University and Eötvös Lorand University trained three domestic dogs to choose between warm (31 C) and ambient temperature, each at a distance of 1,6 meters. The dogs could not see or smell the difference between these objects. (Scientists could only detect the difference by touching the surface.) After training, the dogs were tested for skill in double-blind experiments.

The researchers also scanned the brains of 13 domestic dogs of various breeds in a functional magnetic resonance imaging scanner, while presenting bags of objects that emit neutral or weak thermal radiation. The left somatosensory cortex in dogs, which delivers information from the nose, was more sensitive to a warm thermal stimulus than to a neutral one. The scientists identified a cluster of 14 voxels (three-dimensional pixels) in this area of the dog's left hemisphere, but found no such clusters on the right or in any part of the dog's brain in response to a neutral stimulus.
