According to what indicator is the Russian postal service one of the last places in the world?

One of the most quoted economists in the world, American Andrey Shleifer, in 2012 presented the results of an experimental study of the work of postal services in various countries. Shleifer and his colleagues sent 2 letters to the 5 largest cities in each of the 159 countries that signed international postal agreements, which oblige them to deliver letters with addresses in Latin and return them to the sender if delivery fails. Errors were deliberately made in the addresses on the envelopes, so ideally all letters should have been sent back. As a result, a 100% return rate was recorded by the postal services of 10 countries, including the USA, Canada, Finland, Norway, and the Czech Republic. And Russia, along with such countries as Nigeria, Tajikistan and Cambodia, fell into the group of outsiders - not a single letter returned from these states.

What probability does the photo of the baby in the wallet increase?

In 2009, a group of Scottish psychologists conducted an experiment, "losing" 240 wallets on the streets of Edinburgh, which contained the contact details of the owner. In total, 42% of wallets were returned, however, the return percentage varied greatly depending on which photo was inside. So, the owners were sent 88% of wallets that contained a photo of a baby, 53% with a photo of a pet, 48% with a general family photo, 28% with an image of an elderly couple, and only 15% of those where there was no photo at all.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Trains instead of planes 30.01.2020

Europeans are increasingly opting for rail transport over air travel because they are ashamed of the damage that airplanes do to the environment.

In Europe, the movement to protect the environment is rapidly gaining popularity, symbolized by the Swedish schoolgirl Greta Thunberg. Environmental activists, in particular, are promoting a phenomenon called Flight Shaming - its supporters are calling for shame on those who fly planes and thereby allegedly harm the planet. Apparently, Europeans are really becoming ashamed of flying: in Sweden and Germany, the number of air travel has fallen for the first time in ten years.

Swedish airports in 2019 received 4% fewer passengers than in 2018, and airlines carried 2% fewer people (on domestic flights - 9% less). German airlines delivered 0,4% fewer passengers, while domestic traffic fell by 2%. Supporters of flight shaming are calling for the use of trains instead of planes, and apparently this is working: in Europe, there is an increase in passenger traffic on railway lines.

The German Deutsche Bahn in 2019 transported a record number of passengers on long-distance trains - about 150 million people per year. Due to the increase in traffic, Europe's rail networks may face problems with outdated infrastructure. For example, 33 thousand kilometers of German railways are overloaded, which is why every fourth train arrived late in 2019. In the UK, the situation is even worse - every third train is late and the carriages are often overcrowded.
