Why are some insects harmful to humans?

In nature, there are many insects useful and necessary for humans. But there are also others who bite and sting and spread disease. Some insects are harmful and should be avoided. The black widow spider belongs to this group. It can be found from southern California to Chile, especially in damp, secluded areas. The venom of this spider causes severe pain and spasm of the intestinal muscles. Many victims of this spider die.

Most insect bites are temporary and not very serious. But some people are allergic to bee and wasp stings. In the event of a bite, such people need to consult a doctor, get a medicine that prevents the occurrence of an allergic reaction. Some types of mosquitoes carry disease-causing bacteria, such as yellow fever, malaria, and sleeping sickness. Insects carry these microbes and pass them on to the bitten prey.

Typhoid is a disease carried by lice. It is a very serious danger when people are forced to live very crowded. Flies are carriers of cholera, dysentery, hepatitis and typhoid fever. All diseases transmitted by insects are less likely to occur in well-cleaned places, clean, where there is no dust. In such conditions, it is more difficult for insects to reproduce.

Was Pluto a satellite of Neptune?

Recently (August 2006), demoted from major planets to minor planets, Pluto, more than 5,8 million km away from us, revolves around the Sun in an orbit inclined to the plane of the orbits of all other planets by 17 ° and so elongated that from time to time enters the orbit of its 16 times larger neighbor Neptune. Therefore, some astronomers believe that once Pluto could be its satellite.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Testosterone and sports 11.12.2014

It is generally accepted that testosterone helps to win the competition, whether it's a regular yard fight or something noble-Olympic. Indeed, testosterone has been linked to aggressive behavior, increased self-confidence, etc., but does it really help you win in sports? To test this, you just need to assess the level of the hormone in athletes, and then compare it with the distribution of places and medals.

David A. Edwards, Christopher Elliott and Kathleen V. Casto from Emory University (USA) did just that - they compared the level of testosterone in the saliva of those who had to run cross-country, with the results of the run. Samples were taken three times: before the warm-up (warm-up), after the warm-up and at the finish line. As the authors of the work write in their article in The International Journal of Exercise Science, testosterone levels increased in both women and men, and already during the warm-up. At the finish line, testosterone in saliva turned out to be even more, in addition to it, the level of the stress hormone cortisol also increased. However, sports results did not coincide with the hormonal picture. One of the competitors came to the finish line one of the last, despite the strongest jump in testosterone.

A year ago, David Edwards and Kathleen Casto found out that the status of a player in the team could depend on him. The study was conducted among women: those who had low levels of cortisol, but high levels of testosterone, were highly respected. Something similar was reported a year ago on the pages of Psychological Science by psychologists from the Erasmus University of Rotterdam (Netherlands) - they came to the conclusion that this "hormone of aggressiveness" in some conditions promotes cooperation and even noble behavior, which, in turn, cannot not affect the relationship with the person. True, the emphasis of that work was on something else: that the effect of testosterone depends on the social context.
