Why did Bulgaria issue a coin with a face value of 1,95583 leva?

In 1999, Bulgaria equated its currency lev to the German mark. A few years later, the marks were replaced by the euro at the rate of 1,95583 marks = 1 euro, and the lev became pegged to the euro in the same ratio. When the country's accession agreement to the European Union was signed in 2005, the Bulgarian National Bank issued a commemorative coin with a unique denomination of 1,95583 leva as a symbol of Bulgaria's desire to adopt the euro in the future as well.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why is the drum round?

The drum is perhaps the most popular of all percussion instruments. Even today it looks the same as many centuries ago, and looks like a segment of a large wooden pipe, the ends of which are covered with leather. The membrane of this instrument is stretched over a wooden or metal ring. Previously, this was done with rope and nails, now special metal screws are used to stretch leather or synthetic film.

But why is the drum always round and not square or, for example, not triangular? The answer is very simple. It turns out that you can stretch the skin evenly only on a circle.

They play the drum with wooden sticks with bulges at the end. With their help, you can cause a variety of effects - from a faint rustle to thunder, the most difficult thing is drumming, that is, a fast tremolo.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Self-hypnosis or allergies 06.07.2008

There are people who claim that they are able to feel radiation from electromagnetic waves, for example, from cell phone base stations, and that this radiation is harmful to their health. There was even a term "electromagnetic allergy".

English doctors from the University of Essex decided to test this statement. They put such sensitive people in a booth next to the cell-site antenna. The antenna was randomly turned on, and it emitted waves characteristic of mobile phones, then turned off. And the subject had to guess when dangerous radiations penetrate his body, and when they are not.

It turned out that the correct answers were given in about half of the cases, that is, at random. The test subjects said that in the cabin they were sometimes overcome with fear, excitement, they felt stress, and they believe that it was at such moments that they were irradiated. The control group consisted of people who did not claim to be able to feel radio waves. They, too, guessed the periods when the antenna was turned on about half the time, but they did not feel either fear or nervous tension.

The conclusion of scientists: if someone assures that a cellular telephony station located near the house affects well-being, most likely this is self-hypnosis. However, the authors of the study emphasize that they cannot say anything about the possible long-term consequences of such a neighborhood.
