Did you know?

Why are flamingos pink?

Yes, because they eat a lot of blue-green algae.

True, flamingos also eat shrimp, but the color of the bird comes from algae. Despite their name, blue-green algae can be red, purple, brown, yellow, and even orange.

Flamingos got their name from their bright color. As well as the "fiery" flamenco dance, the name of this beautiful bird comes from the Latin flamma, which means "fire". The red and white flag of Peru is painted in honor of flamingos.

Flamingos come in four varieties. All of them are at least ten million years old, and were once found in Europe, Australia and America. Today, flamingos can be found in parts of Africa, India, South America and southern Europe. All flamingos are monogamous. They carry one egg a year, laying it on a mound of earth or silt. Both parents incubate the egg in turn, and both parents secrete bright red, highly nutritious "milk" from the throat, which is used to feed the chicks for the first two months. Flamingos are one of two "milking" bird species; the second are pigeons. In captivity, flamingos, even without being parents themselves, involuntarily produce milk if they hear the squeak of chicks nearby.

After the chicks leave the parental nest, they go to live in a spacious nursery. And although up to 30 birds can be in such places at the same time, young flamingos are fed only by their own parents, who recognize their offspring by their cry.

Flamingos eat with their necks arched so that the upper jaw is down. Unlike other birds, flamingos filter their food - just like whales and oysters do. The edges of their massive, downward-curved beaks are equipped with small horny plates that filter the disturbed soil, retaining only its edible part. The lesser flamingo (Phoeniconaias minor) has such a dense filter that it can trap plankton less than 0,05 mm in diameter. The flamingo's tongue works like a pump, pumping water through its beak four times per second.

Pliny the Elder recommended flamingo tongue as an excellent delicacy.

Flamingos sleep standing on one leg, and only one half of the body sleeps (like dolphins), while the other is always on the alert.

Flamingos live for fifty years. They live in lakes that are not suitable for the life of other animals, with a high content of salt and soda, where the water is undrinkable and nothing grows. Therefore, the main predators for flamingos are zookeepers.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why are brass doorknobs better than steel?

Some metals, such as silver and copper, have an oligodynamic effect - their ions can kill bacteria and other microorganisms by denaturing proteins and destroying cells. That is why the use of vessels silvered from the inside for storing and transporting drinking water is more than justified. And doorknobs made of brass (an alloy of copper and zinc) self-clean fairly quickly even in high-traffic public places, while steel handles are items with one of the highest concentrations of bacteria.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Liquid nanotransistors for supercomputers 29.03.2013

The advantage of liquid nanotransistors is that they remain 'on' or 'off' in the absence of drive current. In the future, based on them, it is possible to create powerful and efficient computing devices. Scientists at the IBM Almaden Research Lab in San Jose, Calif., have unveiled a new experimental way to store information in liquid nanotransistors, Technology Review reports.

The researchers demonstrated a material consisting of nanochannels filled with an electrolyte. If an electric current is applied to such a material, a layer of ions is formed in it, which changes the conductivity properties of the materials. This process is reversible. By applying electricity to a given material, it can be switched from a state of conduction to a state of non-conductivity and vice versa, thus writing a one or a zero.

A feature of liquid nanotransistors is that they do not need a constant supply of electricity in order to maintain their current state, explained Stuart Parkin, IBM Research Fellow, one of the project participants, who is involved in another IBM project - development ' memory with a treadmill'.

"Unlike today's transistors, the new material can be switched 'on' or 'off' permanently without the need to maintain the state," he said, adding that over time this property could lead to new, more efficient logic devices and computer memory. The liquid nanotransistors created by scientists make it possible to build electronic circuits that can be reprogrammed. This opens up more opportunities than today's processors, where the configuration of the electrical channels cannot be changed, Parkin said.

The problem is that the transition of liquid nanotransistors from one state to another is slow - one or two orders of magnitude slower compared to the speed of modern microcircuits. Reducing the size of the transistors and placing them closer together could solve the problem, Parkin said. Ultimately, with their help it will be possible to create powerful computing devices with lower energy consumption, the scientist believes. According to Parkin's colleagues, the new technology has yet to be studied well enough to see if it can contribute to the development of the microelectronics industry.
