Why conduct a population census?

The census is a phenomenon as old as the collection of taxes or the creation of an army, although in earlier centuries it could have been called differently. In the past, rulers conducted a census in order to know how many people they could send to war and how much money they could collect from their subjects. Naturally, they tried their best to hide the truth from ordinary people who suffered from the consequences of the census.

In most countries, the population census asks people only the most important and at the same time simple questions regarding the age of people living in the house, their family ties, place of birth and nationality, and place of work. Sometimes questions are included about the date of marriage and the number of children, and in some cases (in rural areas) about the size of the family plot of land and the number of livestock. After collecting all the information, it is summarized and analyzed.

The results of the analysis are reported to the government. They play an important role in planning such areas of its activity as building the required number of schools in a particular region, forecasting the cost of pensions for the elderly, etc. When comparing the figures just obtained with the results of the previous census, one can judge whether the population, the rate of migration of people from the countryside to the city. They are objective indicators of improvement or deterioration in the living conditions of the population, development or decline in a particular industry.

In countries where government representatives are elected by vote, the number of representatives of a particular region in parliament is determined based on the results of the census.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Biggest fish 04.04.2004

In a clay quarry near the city of Peterborough (Great Britain), the remains of the largest fish that ever lived on Earth were found. Its scientific name is Leedsichthys, that is, "Leeds fish", after the name of a farmer who, at the end of the XNUMXth century, found the first small specimen.

The skeleton now discovered has not completely preserved the tail, so it is difficult to accurately determine the length of this monster during life. But paleontologists estimate it in the range of 15 to 30 meters, most likely around 20, which is twice the length of the largest modern fish - the whale shark.

This species, dating back to the Jurassic period, fed, like the whale shark, on plankton. The largest specimen of Leedsichthys known so far occupies 20 museum boxes, and the fossils found now - 120.
