The Golden Fleece

Ancient Greek and Roman mythology
Ancient Greek and Roman mythology

Phraseologism: The Golden Fleece.

Meaning: Wealth, the mastery of which makes a lot of effort.

Origin: The ancient Greek myth tells about the campaign of King Jason and his friends to Colchis (the eastern coast of the Black Sea) for the golden fleece - the golden skin of a magical ram. It was not easy to get this fleece: it was guarded by a dragon and bulls, spewing flames from their mouths. For the campaign, Jason built the ship "Argo" (from Greek - "fast"). By the name of this ship, all participants in the campaign began to be called Argonauts. Having overcome all obstacles with the help of the daughter of the Colchis king Eet Medea, the Greeks mastered the rune and returned with it to their homeland, to Hellas. The first to describe this myth was the legendary poet of ancient Greece, Pindar (518-422 BC). The word "Argonauts" is also used allegorically - navigators, lovers of sea voyages, adventurers (jokingly-iron.).

Random phraseology:

We are accustomed to believing that without the Germans there is no salvation for us.

Meaning:

Quoted as a commentary on blind admiration for foreign experience, lack of self-esteem, self-confidence (ironic, disapproving, contempt.).

Origin:

From the comedy "Woe from Wit" (1824) by A. S. Griboyedov (1795-1829). The words of Chatsky (act. 1, yavl. 7): "As we used to believe from an early time, // That there is no salvation for us without the Germans!"

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Inflatable steel structures 20.06.2021

A design team from Poland and Switzerland has perfected a method for creating inflatable steel furniture that has revolutionized wind energy and construction. Designers - architect Oskar Zieta and materials scientist at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Philippe Domain - created the engineering method as a way to make steel products lighter and less expensive without sacrificing strength.

This technology, called free internal pressure deformation (FiDU), requires laser cutting of steel sheets that are precisely shaped with an accuracy of plus or minus 0,1 mm. These 1mm thick high strength steel sheets are then robot welded for maximum manufacturing precision.

The three-legged Plopp stools designed by Zieta are produced as rolled tubes from a thin sheet of steel. They can then be inflated with a simple valve to create a strong, lightweight and stylish seat. Thanks to the inherent strength of steel and innovative FiDU technology, the award-winning Plopp chair can withstand a load of more than two tons.

Since the compressed air pressure only needs to be 0,1-50 bar, furniture made using this method can even be inflated with a bicycle pump. Unlike existing hydroforming methods used in the automotive sector, FiDU does not rely on a mold to form the steel during inflation, so it can be done even at home.

This means that the metal will deform as it inflates according to its natural characteristics, making the individual contours of each piece unique, even if they are all of the same design.

While the concept of flat furniture has changed the face of interior shopping forever, the FiDU method offers even more convenience with less weight. Transporting even flat packing furniture takes up a lot of space, but uninflated Plopp stools take up almost no space compared to fully formed items. This leads to a significant reduction in transport-related costs and emissions.

Designers see the possibilities of inflatable steel going far beyond furniture. Thanks to the team's experience in architecture, they were successful in building a small bridge using an inflatable steel structure.
