Did you know?

What are carnivorous plants?

Some plants living on poor soils (in particular, with a lack of nitrogen) are able to replenish mineral hunger at the expense of other organisms, mainly small insects.

Approximately 450 species of insectivorous plants are known on all inhabited continents, but most of them are in southwestern Australia. They trap their prey with adhesives and other devices, and break down their prey with enzymes.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Who is a narwhal?

Narwhal is one of the most interesting members of the cetacean family. Many of us believe that there is only one type of whale, but in fact there are several varieties of them. The most interesting of them are the so-called toothed whales. Toothed whales prey on fish and cephalopods and feed mainly on them.

Sperm whales are the largest of the toothed whales. They reach twenty meters in length, and their distinctive feature is a massive head.

Another representative of this suborder is the bottlenose, so named because of the strange bone growths on the sides of the head. Narwhal is also a toothed whale. It lives mostly in arctic waters and has something that no other whale has: the male narwhal has a long bone tusk growing on the left side of its mouth that sticks out like a sword!

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

Stability prevents miracles from happening 28.08.2020

A miracle is often explained by the action of supernatural forces. Since supernatural forces are involved in miracles, it is natural to assume that miracles are more often spoken of by those who believe in the existence of these forces. On the other hand, miracles are seen from ignorance, that is, from lack of education and lack of curiosity; and lack of education often stems from poverty. This means that miracles are more often heard from people who are poorly educated and poor.

But not everything is so simple. Edwin Eschler of Baylor University analyzed data from sociological surveys that were conducted several years ago in Latin America and which concerned belief in miracles. The polls involved 15400 people from 16 countries. And the first thing that caught my eye was that the level of education in itself is not connected with miracles. The same applies to the economic situation, that is, if you compare richer people and poorer people, then the level of income does not affect the "wonderful" experience. People below the poverty line, who have no money for medicine or clothes, and barely enough for food, talk about miracles more than anyone else.

The factor that is really connected to the experience of the miraculous is life's uncertainty. Let a person be very educated and financially secure, but if he feels a threat to his position, if he feels instability, he will more often see miracles around. And vice versa - stability interferes with miracles, and even a poorly educated and poor person will talk about them less often if everything is smooth in his life and no shocks are foreseen.

A rich person has less reason to fear some kind of crisis (although wealth itself can be a powerful source of anxiety). A good education is again more accessible to wealthy people. The rich and educated may indeed be less likely to see miracles, but here it must be borne in mind that their lives are usually more stable than those of the poor. It can be said that wealth and education make it difficult to see miracles, making life less dangerous and more predictable.
