If an economic craftsman himself makes various machines, for example, small-scale mechanization tools that facilitate work in the household and at home, then he cannot do without a welding machine. Among amateur designers, the most common devices are electric arc welding with stick electrodes.

True, "welders" can also be different - in one case this is a home-made device based on a school laboratory transformer (LATR), and someone has a proprietary semi-automatic device. But all of them can be divided into two types: working on alternating or direct current.

The advantages of welding machines of the second type in comparison with the first are known. Firstly, this is the softness of the formation and stability of the arc burning in all modes of welding and cutting workpieces. Secondly, the evenness and high quality of the resulting seams. Third - low noise level (cod).

Therefore, already having an AC welding machine, I decided to make another one - on direct current, and I think that it was not in vain. The design turned out to be very workable in terms of the electrodes used (from 2 mm to 6 mm) and reliable due to the simplicity of execution.

Schematic diagram of a DC welding machine

My welding machine uses a 5 kW transformer. Its primary winding consists of 270 turns of copper wire with a diameter of 3,5 mm in a cotton insulating sheath. The secondary winding has 60 turns and is made of a copper bus with a cross section of 8x3 mm (like the standard secondary winding of the transformer) and has 38 turns with a gap in the iron of 1,2 mm. A fluoroplastic film wound in several layers was used as external insulation.

All parts of the welding machine are mounted on one common platform platform. Since most of the parts are massive, the device itself turned out to be not easy. Therefore, the platform was installed on a small trolley to make it easier to move the device from place to place.

Another advantage of the DC welding machine was revealed already during its operation. It turns out that with its help it is possible to weld rather thin sheets of stainless steel quite qualitatively even in the conditions of a home workshop.

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Brainprint login 24.07.2016

A system for identifying a person by his encephalogram has been created.

If you put a cap on a person with electrodes for taking an encephalogram, you can read the thoughts of this person, or, as experts say, register what is happening when thinking, for example, multiplying numbers in the mind, the activity of his brain. Further, this data can be somehow used - to create a neurocomputer interface. And you can solve a more difficult task - to identify a person.

For example, in 2015, a group of Associate Professor Sarah Laszlo from the University of Binghampton (USA) tested the operation of such a system on 32 volunteers. They read a certain set of words to them, recorded the electrical impulses arising in the brain, and then tried to identify the participants in the experiment based on these records. The identification accuracy was 97%, but this did not suit the researchers. They planned to create a perfect clearance system instead of a fingerprint or iris pattern - a three percent uncertainty in such an important matter is not good.

In a new series of experiments, participants were presented with pictures with a clearly expressed plot, and each participant had his own picture of brain activity: the identification accuracy increased to 100%.

Researchers are satisfied: after all, brain impulses cannot be faked, unlike a fingerprint or an iris pattern. And for those who dream of reading thoughts at a distance, there is reason to think: if the brain signals are so individual, then you can read them, but the decoding system for each person will have to be selected again.
