Phraseologism: Here you are, (grandmother), and St. George's Day.

Meaning: About unexpectedly unfulfilled hopes, sudden changes for the worse, a sharp restriction of freedom of action (ironic, joking).

Origin: Previously, the expression came from the time of medieval Russia, when the peasants had the right, having settled with the previous landowner, to move on to a new one. According to the law issued by Ivan the Terrible, such a transition could take place only after the completion of agricultural work, and specifically a week before St. George's Day (November 25, according to the old style, when the Great Martyr George, the patron saint of farmers, was celebrated) or a week later. After the death of Ivan the Terrible, such a transition was prohibited and the peasants were fixed to the land. Then the expression "Here's to you, grandmother, and St. George's Day" was born as an expression of chagrin due to changed circumstances. St. George was popularly called Yegoriy, therefore at the same time the word "cheat" arose, that is, to deceive, to cheat.
