Phraseologism: Upside down.

Meaning: 1. Somersault, over the head, upside down, 2. upside down, in an overturned position, 3. in complete disarray (simple).

Origin: The etymology is obscured. The word torso can go back to the verb to stir up, that is, "pull, turn over." It is also assumed that tormashki comes from the dialect torma "legs". According to another hypothesis, the word torso is related to the word brake (old tormas). Tormas used to be called iron strips under the sleigh runner, used to make the sleigh roll less. The expression upside down could refer to a sleigh overturned on ice or snow.

Random phraseology:

Thread of Ariadne.

Meaning:

1. A guiding drink, a guiding thought, a way to help get out of a difficult situation, solve a difficult issue. 2. Way out of any difficult, confusing situation.

Origin:

It arose from Greek myths about the Athenian hero Theseus (Theseus), who killed the Minotaur, a monstrous half-bull, half-man. At the request of the Cretan king Minos, the Athenians were obliged to send seven young men and seven girls to Crete every year, who were given to be eaten by the Minotaur, who lived in a labyrinth built for him, from where no one could get out. To accomplish a dangerous feat, Theseus was helped by the daughter of the Cretan king Ariadne, who fell in love with him. Secretly from her father, she gave him a sharp sword and a ball of thread. When Theseus and the boys and girls doomed to be torn to pieces were taken to the labyrinth, Theseus tied the end of the ball of thread at the entrance and went along the intricate passages, gradually unwinding the ball. Having killed the Minotaur, Theseus found his way out of the labyrinth by a thread and led out all the doomed from there. (Ovid, "Metamorphoses", 8, 172, "Heroines", 10, 103).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Microscopic robots out of thin air 05.06.2012

Scientists have created microscopic robots literally out of thin air. The original technology can be used in the manufacture of microstructures and various fields of experimental science.

When it comes to microrobots, we usually think of complex scaled down mechanical systems with tiny motors, computers, and transmission gears. Sometimes it is still easier to use existing micro-objects as robots, for example, microorganisms that respond to magnetic fields. American scientists have found a completely new approach and created robots, which are air bubbles that are driven by lasers.

In general, creating air bubbles in a saline solution is not difficult - a syringe with air and a sharp needle is enough. It is much more difficult to manage them to do any useful work. To make the "bubble" robots move around, the scientists used a 400-mW 980-nm laser that passes through the bubble. As a result, a local heating zone is created on one side, where the bubble rushes. Moving the laser beam makes it possible to direct the bubbles in any direction with high accuracy and accelerate them to a relatively high speed of about 4 mm/s.

In addition to being able to create as many robots as you want, laser-controlled bubbles have another big advantage over the more common microbots. So, with the help of multiple beams, you can control each bubble separately, while microrobots controlled by a magnetic field move synchronously in a “flock”.

Currently, scientists are trying to adapt "bubble" robots for transporting microbeads and assembling complex structures. A perfect control system is also being developed, which will allow real-time control of the operation of the bubbles. In the future, bubble robots will be able to assemble complex structures and then disappear without a trace, leaving behind impeccably done work.
