I take my good where I find it

Jean Baptiste Poquelin (Molière)
Jean Baptiste Poquelin (Molière)

Phraseologism: I take my good where I find it.

Meaning: About a man prone to stealing.

Origin: According to the French writer J. Grimaret in his book "The Life of Moliere" (1705), these words were spoken by the French playwright Jean Baptiste Moliere (pseudonym of J. B. Poquelin, 1622-1673) in response to accusations of plagiarism. The reason for this was the phrase from the comedy of another author, sounded in Molière's comedy "The Tricks of Scapin" (1671), from the play "The Ridiculed Pedant" (act. 2, yavl. 4) by Cyrano de Bergerac (1619-1665). But if this author left her unnoticed by the public, then thanks to Moliere's play she became winged, and not only in French. This phrase is now known in the form: "What the hell brought me to this galley!" J. Grimare claims that the author is Moliere, who at one time uttered this phrase in the presence of Cyrano de Bergerac, and the latter, having abused the trust of his fellow writer, used it in his play. Therefore, according to J. Grimare, Molière had every right to a replica invented by him, and he had every reason to comment: "I take my good where I find it."

Random phraseology:

You're not in Chicago, my dear.

Meaning:

It is cited as a proposal to moderate one's demands to reckon with reality, in which far from all desires (even reasonable, justified ones) can be satisfied (jokingly ironic).

Origin:

From the poem "Mr. Twister" (1933) by Samuil Yakovlevich Marshak (1887-1964). The American millionaire Twister came with his daughter to Leningrad. A tired daughter asks her father to buy a house if they do not find a place in a hotel: "- Buy! - // Father // Answers, // Sighing. - // You are not in Chicago, // My dear. // House on the Neva / / I'd be glad to buy... // Yes, he won't want to // Sell Leningrad!"

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>
