What is Protein?

All living cells contain protein. It follows from this that protein is a substance necessary for life. Indeed, our word "protein" comes from the Greek word for "first", because protein is considered the most important element of living matter.

Each type of cell has its own protein. Proteins are made from a combination of substances called amino acids. There are over twenty-one types of amino acids. Each amino acid group includes elements such as nitrogen, carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Different amino acids can combine in different ways to make a protein, which has resulted in thousands of different proteins.

For example, meat is known to contain protein, but did you know that meat contains at least twelve to fifteen types of protein? Many foods that are considered healthy for us are so because they contain the proteins we need. This includes milk, eggs, lean meats, fish, peas, beans, peanuts, and some grains. They are important for a person because they supply him with amino acids that his body is not able to produce on its own. It must obtain amino acids from the proteins contained in the food. They are called "essential amino acids", which means that the body cannot do without them.

Certain types of amino acids, and in significant amounts, are required by our body tissues so that they can use what they need to function properly. Vegetable proteins, such as peas, beans and cereals, do not contain all the necessary amino acids. But they are still very valuable in the diet if combined with some animal proteins. The human body cannot store amino acids for future use. This means that we need to take all the necessary types of these acids at the same time.

Bread and milk should be eaten at the same meal so that the amino acids they contain can be used together to form new body tissues. A moderate amount of various protein-containing foods should be taken with meals. With all of this in mind, you will be getting enough of the essential amino acids to meet your body's protein needs.
