Phraseologism: Know yourself.

Meaning: A person needs to understand what he wants (what will make him truly happy) and what opportunities he has to achieve this goal.

Origin: From Latin: "Nosce te ipsum". Ancient Greek original: "Gnothi se auton". Erroneously attributed to the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates. Inscription on the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. According to the philosopher Plato in his dialogue "Protagoras", this is the fruit of the joint reflections of the "seven great sages" of Ancient Greece. He writes that once Thales, Pittacus, Byant, Solon, Cleobulus, Mison and Chilo (VI century BC) gathered in the temple of Apollo at Delphi and, as a result of a long debate, came to the absolute, in their opinion, truth. Found truth - "know thyself" - they wrote on the wall of the temple in Delphi. Hence the traditional name of this thesis - "the commandment of the Delphic oracle." As for Socrates, he made this expression very popular, explaining it to his students, widely using it in his conversations and speeches. The aforementioned ancient Greek philosopher Chilo developed the same idea as follows: "Know yourself, and you will know the gods and the Universe."
