EFFECTIVE FOCUSES AND THEIR CLUES Punching with swords. Focus secret Directory / Spectacular tricks and their clues Focus Description: Two people carry out a small cabinet, closed on all sides, on high legs. The illusionist removes the lid from it, together with his assistants opens all four walls and lowers them down on hinges. After this, the back and two side walls are raised again, so that only the front wall and the lid are missing. A small ladder is attached to the cabinet. The assistant comes out and walks up the stairs into the locker (Fig. 180). The steps are removed, then the front wall is raised and attached.
The assistant is standing in a box; In order for the performer to close the cabinet with the lid, she has to bend over and sit down. The illusionist takes swords from a nearby rack, shows them to the public and begins to pierce the cabinet with them, leaving them stuck in the walls (Fig. 181).
The number of swords ranges from 8 to 15. It is not worth increasing this number, as it will not give a greater effect and will only tire the audience. After all the swords have been pierced through the walls of the cabinet, the performer takes a pike and, standing on the ladder, pierces the lid and bottom with it. The assistants turn the cabinet around, showing swords that glisten under the rays of the spotlights aimed at them. After this, they are removed from the box, just like the pike. The lid is removed, and to everyone's amazement, the assistant comes out of the locker, changed into a different costume. She bows, and at this time the assistants take the apparatus, swords, and rack backstage. Focus secret: Having entered the locker, the assistant sits down with her legs tucked under her in an oriental style and leans her back against the back wall of the locker. The swords are passed through the walls into holes specially made for this purpose so as not to hit the girl. The assistant should carefully monitor the blades that pass close to her, intercepting them with her hand and quickly directing them into the exit holes. At the same time, she must understand well the location and direction of the swords and not confuse them, otherwise this will lead to a breakdown in the performance. Each sword must be strictly and accurately aimed at the corresponding exit hole. The illusionist himself must present the swords strictly in order. Violation can lead to an accident if the assistant is inexperienced: she may be severely scratched. Under all conditions, blades should be slightly dulled. To hide the suit, and if necessary, the mask, a sideboard is made in the locker from fabric painted to match the color of the device. This is a bag with a slit, attached with an elastic band to the lid, where it will be invisible. As soon as the lid is closed, the assistant quickly takes off the suit and hides it in the bag, remaining in the other dress. At this time, the performer, together with his assistants, shows the audience swords. In Fig. 182 shows a top view of the cabinet. There are two people inside, the peak has been removed for clarity.
An amateur who wants to make an apparatus for this attraction must first make a test working model; its height together with the legs is no more than 20-25 cm. Instead of hinges, you can simply use tape to open the walls, gluing it to the bottom and walls. The walls are made of thin cardboard, and the wall frames are made of thick cardboard or thin plywood. On the sides of the walls there are holes for swords, which are shown in the pictures. The quadrangular holes are the entrance holes, the sword is inserted into them, the triangular ones are the output holes, from which the ends of the swords come out. All holes are numbered in a certain sequence.
Swords for the model can be easily made from a splinter, and a pencil can perfectly serve as a pike. It is necessary to pierce starting from the back side B (Fig. 184). Pass sword No. 1 from hole No. 1 into hole No. 1 on the right wall G (Fig. 184). Then, taking sword No. 2, pass it flat through the entrance hole No. 2 in the left wall B; it should exit into exit hole No. 2 on the front wall A. A third sword is passed into the same front wall through hole No. 3; it should come out in the back wall B. In the same way, swords No. 4, 5 will come out from the front wall A into holes No. 4 and 5 in the back wall B. Sword No. 6 will go into hole No. 6 of the left wall B. Swords No. 7 and 8 will go again in the back wall B in Nos. 7 and 8.
Go again to the right wall G; sword No. 9 will pass into No. 9 of the back wall B; sword No. 10 - in No. 10 of the left wall B; sword No. 11 - in the front wall A, in hole No. 11; swords No. 12 and 13 will enter the left wall B in No. 12 and 13. Move to the back wall B. Pass the No. 14 sword straight into the front wall L at No. 14. Pierce sword No. 15 obliquely into the front wall A in No. 15. Pass the next sword No. 16 into the left wall B in No. 16. Now let's turn to the last left side B. Starting with sword No. 17, pass all swords No. 18, 19 and the last No. 20 into the right wall D into exit holes No. 17, 18, 19 and 20. Make a small 7 mm hole in the middle of the cover of the model and in the bottom of the device and insert a lance pencil into it. Now take out the "pike", remove the lid and look inside. You will see where you can place models (dolls) of two people. Having thoroughly familiarized yourself with the layout, accurately calculate the layout of the apparatus, calculate its size, taking into account the height, build, and volume of your assistants, and begin building the apparatus itself. Make the bottom not too thick (no more than 8 cm). Everything should be done easily and at the same time very durable. Having built the apparatus, prime it several times and paint it, consulting, if possible, with the decorative artist. Start rehearsals. Start inserting the swords slowly so that the person in the device can take the end of it in time and accurately point it at the desired exit hole. Firmly knowing the order and direction of the swords is the first and most important rule for your future assistant, otherwise accidents are possible. The performance is usually performed at a fast pace, so the assistant must immediately direct the movement of the swords. Using one person with a limited number of swords, say 8-10 or 12, greatly simplifies the number. It is not so difficult to remember the arrangement of swords, two or three on each side, and there will be incomparably more free space in the apparatus and it will be easy for the assistant to maneuver the swords.
