EFFECTIVE FOCUSES AND THEIR CLUES Frame for a portrait. Focus secret Directory / Spectacular tricks and their clues Focus Description: A frame for a portrait is placed on a small table, next to it are a newspaper and two silk scarves: one small, the other larger. The magician takes the frame, shows it from all sides to the audience (Fig. 146, A) and puts it on the table. She waves her handkerchief, proving that there is nothing in it, and covers the frame with it. Then, showing the newspaper from all sides, he rolls up the bag and also shows that there is nothing in it (Fig. 146, B).
Then he takes the smallest bright silk scarf from the table, puts it inside the bag, carefully tucking it in, wraps the edges of the bag and passes it to the assistant to hold. The illusionist makes several passes with the wand in the direction from the bag to the frame and counts: "One! Two! Three! Done!" He asks the assistant to open the bag, which he does. The package is empty. The scarf "disappeared" from it. The assistant unfolds the newspaper and, showing it from all sides, crumples it and throws it backstage. The magician, going up to the table, removes the frame and pulls off the handkerchief with which it is covered. Everyone sees that the handkerchief that disappeared from the bag lies inside the frame. Props: Frame with a secret device. Newspaper prepared for a bag. Two small silk bright identical handkerchiefs. The third scarf is larger to close the frame. Focus secret: There are two secrets in this trick. The first is the frame design shown in Fig. 147. Front view of the frame - A. View of the frame from the back side - B and side view - C.
On fig. 148 shows a frame in section. In the lower part, it has an empty space 3, into which very fine, well-washed river sand, dyed dark green or dark blue with aniline, is poured. Not one glass is inserted into the frame, but two. Between them the distance is 2 mm. If you turn the frame end 8 up, then the sand from room 3 will pour between the panes. The inside of the frame is pasted over with paper of the same color as the sand.
In addition, the frame inside is smeared with a layer of glue and sprinkled with a thin layer of colored sand. Viewers will feel that the frame is empty. In fact, a small bright-colored silk handkerchief is laid in it in advance. From the drawings, the simple mechanics of the frame device is clear. The frame is made from cardboard. Glasses are glued with BF-2 glue. On fig. 148 shows: 1 - two glasses; 2 - frame body made of cardboard and covered with leatherette on top; 3 - a room for colored sand, shown in the figure by dots; 4 - the back wall of the frame, which leans back to charge the handkerchief inside the frame in place 5; 6 - two simple rotating shutters for locking the rear wall (these locks are clearly visible in Fig. 147, B); 7 - leg-stand, which, bending in one direction or another in the direction of the arrows, allows you to put the frame in any position. If it is directed with end 8 down (until all the sand is poured into compartment 3), then both glasses are taken by the audience as one. They clearly see the inside of frame 5 with a handkerchief. If, however, the frame is turned with end 9 down, then the sand from room 3 will immediately fall between the panes and hide the handkerchief from the eyes of the audience. This is the whole secret of the frame. Before showing the number, the handkerchief is placed in room 5 and, having closed the lid 4 and locks 6, put the frame on the table so that the end 8 is facing up (the sand will hide the handkerchief). Viewers will take the frame for an empty one. Then the magician, covering it with a handkerchief, imperceptibly turns the end of 8 down and puts it on the table. The sand from the glass is poured into room 3 and opens the handkerchief. Having removed the handkerchief from the frame, the performer shows that the bright handkerchief is in the frame ("passed" from the bag), and then, opening the lid 4, takes out the handkerchief and shows the audience that the frame is empty. Through the glass, everyone sees the open lid and the magician's hand holding the frame. The second secret of the trick lies in the device of the bag, "fun", which is done as follows. One sheet of newspaper is folded in half (in width) and glued inside along the edges. Thus, a double quarter of the newspaper will be obtained (Fig. 149).
In the upper right corner of A, an incision is made of such a size that a small handkerchief can enter it. This double quarter is taken with the left hand by the lower right edge of B: four fingers are placed on the newspaper, and the big one is pushed under it. Then the newspaper is taken with the right hand at point B with the thumb from above, the rest from below; the left hand is turned inside. Thus it turns out a bag-"pound". The bottom is tightly twisted at point B - and the bag is completely ready. Having folded and straightened it, the conjurer imperceptibly opens the flap of the cut, where he then puts the handkerchief. He carefully tucks it inside with a stick between sheets of newspaper and, having closed the valve cut, carefully aligns the edges so that the handkerchief is not visible when the bag is opened. When opening the bag, the assistant should skillfully and naturally cover the incision with the ends of his fingers. It would be good if he later showed the newspaper empty on both sides, casually crumpled it up and threw it backstage. Author: Vadimov A.A.
