As British zoologists have discovered, the shaggy hamster living in the mountain forests of East Africa smears its fur with poison to protect itself from predators. An animal 25-35 centimeters long chews the bark of a tree containing strophanthin and other alkaloids that act on the heart, and smears the chewing gum over its fur.
