Focus Description:

The performer shows the audience a large scarf on both sides and throws one end of it over his left shoulder. The scarf covers the shoulder and left arm. With his right hand, the performer takes out a vase of water from under the handkerchief (Fig. 90, 1).

Focus The appearance and disappearance of an aquarium with live fish
Fig. 90

Some water spills over the edge onto the floor; viewers see goldfish swimming in a vase. The magician passes the vase to an assistant and, removing the handkerchief from his left shoulder, again shows it empty on both sides. Then, throwing a handkerchief over his right shoulder, he takes a vase with fish from the assistant with his left hand, hides it under the handkerchief and immediately removes it from his shoulder, slightly raising the hand in which he holds the edge of the handkerchief. It seems to everyone that the vase is under the scarf. The magician takes his hand with a handkerchief to the side and immediately makes a sharp wave - the vase has disappeared!

Props:

Double-walled glass vase with fixture.

Rubber cover for a vase.

Large lined silk scarf.

Celluloid "goldfish" (five pieces).

Focus secret:

On fig. 90, 2 we see a vase in section. Its diameter. 18-20 cm, height 7 cm. Below there is a hole B with a diameter of 5-6 cm, a copper rim with an internal thread is tightly glued into it. This bezel-ring is carefully sealed with waterproof glue. A plug C with an external thread, machined from copper, is screwed tightly into the thread of ring B. The cork has a small corrugated side, for which it is convenient to screw it in and out. On the side for greater tightness is a rubber thin gasket ring. This design allows you to fill the vase with water, lower the imitations of "goldfish" into the water and screw the cork very tightly. From a distance, viewers will not notice that the vase has double walls.

Water is poured into space D flush with the edges and carefully cover the vase with a rubber cover. Having loaded it in this way, they put it in the left inner large vest pocket, made in a semicircle especially for this purpose. The vase is well hidden by the hollow of the costume and is completely invisible. Under the cover of a handkerchief, it is taken out with the right hand; holding the vessel and handkerchief with his left hand, the illusionist quickly removes the rubber cover with his right and immediately hides it in the pocket where the vase was located. The vase is taken out very carefully. The magician holds it horizontally, shaking it slightly; water poured over into space D splashes onto the floor. It seems that the liquid is pouring out of a full vase. Be sure to pour out all the water so that it does not splash you when the vase disappears.

In order to demonstrate the disappearance of the vase, the vessel is taken in the left hand and, under the cover of a handkerchief, is quickly placed under the right side of the vest - in a pocket specially made for this. Holding the handkerchief with the right hand gives the impression that the vase is still under it. Then, moving their hands to the side, they abruptly tear off the handkerchief. The vase disappears before everyone's eyes! In the absence of live (or celluloid) fish, it is quite possible to replace them with figures carved from carrots, which, when shown in water, create the illusion of live fish swimming in the water.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Telescope Colossus will be able to detect aliens 10.06.2013

The revolutionary possibilities of astronomical observations will for the first time make it possible to detect advanced alien civilizations. To do this, you need to build a new 77-meter telescope that can find brothers in mind within a radius of 60 light years from Earth.

The ambitious and somewhat sensational announcement was published in Astronomy magazine by four astronomers: Jeff Kuhn of the Astronomical University of Hawaii, Svetlana Berdyugina of the University of Freiburg, David Halliday of Dynamic Structures, Ltd. and Casey Harlington of the Searchlight Observatory.

The most important mystery of the Universe for mankind is still the question: are we alone in the Universe? Until now, we have relied on the search for radio signals from advanced civilizations, but so far it has not been successful, and it is not certain that aliens broadcast their signals into space. It would be nice to study other planets by directly observing them with a telescope, but so far one can only dream of such perfect and powerful astronomical instruments.

However, the four astronomers propose to build just such an instrument, especially since modern technologies are already capable of it. Find extraterrestrial life will be able to telescope with a diameter segment (16 mirrors with a diameter of 8 meters) mirror 77 meters. It will explore nearby exoplanets in infrared and be able to detect traces of the activities of an advanced civilization such as ours.

The technogenic activity of a large civilization produces an excess of heat, which creates excess infrared radiation, that is, the planet emits more heat than it receives from the Sun. A sufficiently large telescope could detect this excess heat from planets relatively close to the Sun. NASA and ESA specialists have long prepared a list of infrared signatures that allow us to determine the conditions on a distant planet, now it's up to the "small" - to build a huge telescope capable of finding intelligent neighbors.

Currently, there are several projects of large infrared telescopes, such as 24,5-m GMT, 30-m TMT, 39,3-m E-ELT, but they are not large enough to confidently search for extraterrestrial civilizations. Perhaps, instead of building several telescopes with similar capabilities, it would be much better to build one truly unique and super powerful instrument.

The telescope, called Colossus by scientists, with a main segmental mirror 77 meters in diameter, could find hundreds of Earth-like planets and so-called super-Earths in the potentially habitable zone. It is possible that thanks to Colossus with an ultra-sensitive coronagraph, dozens of extraterrestrial civilizations could have been discovered - at least statistics do not exclude such a possibility. If civilizations are "nearby", for example, at a distance of 20-30 light years, then we will even be able to communicate with them, exchanging messages using laser pulses or radio signals. The scale of this discovery is even difficult to imagine - the fate of mankind will change dramatically.
