This is a fairly well-known toy, but I want to remind you of it, because it is based on a physical phenomenon - friction.

You are holding a vertically stretched string in your hands. A ball is put on the lace (usually it is a wooden ball). The ball is at the top of the lace. According to your "orders" the ball then falls, then stops. Obediently fulfilling all your commands, he descends to the lower hand.

It's all about friction here. The channel in the ball, through which the lace is passed, is not straight, but curved, it is drilled in an arc. When the string is taut, it is pressed harder against the wall of the channel and friction keeps the ball from sliding down. It only takes a little, imperceptibly to the eye, to loosen the tension - and the ball will slide down under the influence of gravity until you pull the cord again.

obedient ball

That's the whole secret of this toy.

If you want to make such a toy yourself, take a table tennis ball and make four small holes in it: two at the ends of one diameter, the other two at the ends of a second diameter perpendicular to the first.

Insert a match into two (opposite each other) drilled holes and cut off the ends protruding from the ball with a safety razor blade. Thread a thin cord through the other two holes with a wire. It should not fit tightly into the holes. When the string is pulled, it will go around the inserted match and will keep the ball from sliding down. When the tension is loosened, the ball can easily fall.

This toy can also be made from a cylindrical box. If its diameter is larger than a match, use a thin stick. It is convenient to use a cardboard box for this toy. It can be pasted over with paper so that the ends of the inserted stick are not visible.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

The leader's charisma harms the company 25.12.2015

Scientists from the University of Cambridge found that in companies with charismatic leaders, employees tend to suppress and hide their emotions, which leads to increased tension, disruption of communication between colleagues, decreased job satisfaction, and ultimately reduces overall performance.

The study found that leaders who show respect for the personality of each subordinate encourage them to express their emotions. And in this case, suppressed emotions do not accumulate, and there is no "explosion" leading to conflicts, disruption of coordination in the team, and so on.

The conclusions are drawn on the basis of surveys of several hundred employees of commercial companies and universities in Germany and Switzerland, the respondents described their reactions to various models and scenarios of the leader's behavior.

Scientists explain that our psyche spends a lot of resources on suppressing unwanted emotions when we try to look outwardly calm in a situation of an emotional storm inside. In such conditions, there are very few resources left for other tasks - remembering information, processing messages, generating new ideas, and so on. In companies with strong charismatic leaders, employees just tend to suppress and ignore their own emotions, the study found.

Thus, psychologists explain, the strong charisma of the leader can harm the effectiveness of the company. This aspect was not considered in earlier studies. Nevertheless, the authors of the work emphasize that it is possible to compensate for the negative effects by showing respect and support for each employee from the leader, when he has the opportunity to safely express his discontent and other negative emotions. Psychologists believe that these two leadership styles are not mutually exclusive.
