Consider English units.

Inch (from Dutch duim, literally - thumb), a submultiple unit of length in the English and American systems of measures, in which the foot is taken as the original unit of length. 1 Inch is 1/12 of a foot. According to international agreements, an inch is accepted as equal to 0,0254 m (exactly). An inch was also included in the old Russian system of measures and amounted to 1/28 of an arshin and 1/12 of a foot.

Cable (Gol. kabeltouw), a non-systemic unit of length used in maritime practice. 1K cables = 0,1 miles (sea) = 185,2 m.

Mile (English, mile, from Latin milia pas-suum - a thousand double Roman steps), a unit of length that was widespread in national non-metric systems of units and is now used mainly in maritime affairs.

In the USSR and most countries, it is used nautical mile, equal, according to the decision of the International Hydrographic Conference (1929), 1,852 km - the average length of the 1' meridian arc. 1 Mile (nautical) = 10 cables.

In the UK, 1 nautical mile = 1,853184 km, 1 land charter mile = 1,609344 km (it also applies in the USA). Geographical Mile (German) - Vis" of the equator *= 7,4204 km. Old Russian Mile = 7,46760 km, old Roman Mile = 1,481 km.

Foot (English foot, literally - foot), a unit of length in the system of English measures. 1 Foot = 1/3 yard = 12 inches = 0,3048 m.

Yard (English yard), a unit of length in the system of English measures, abbreviated designation yd. 1 yard = 3 feet = 36 inches = 0,9144 m.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Remote ignition lock of a credit car 03.10.2014

In the US, cars equipped with a remote engine blocking system are becoming more and more. This technology is used by credit organizations to deal with non-payers. Today, about 2 million credit cars in this country are equipped with such devices.

While such devices have clear advantages for banks, the legality of their use remains in question, as they can be the cause of accidents with the most serious consequences.

There are at least 2 million cars on American roads today, bought on credit and equipped with remote shutdown systems. Such equipment allows you to remotely block the engine ignition and uses the same principles as modern anti-theft systems.

If the car owner has a loan debt, the device installed in the car warns the debtor with sound and light signals about the need to make the next payment under the contract. The creditor may, at his discretion, turn off the engine of the credit machine at a distance, and prevent its further use.

Since such a blockage can occur at any time, it can catch the owner indebted by surprise. In the United States, there have already been cases when the system was activated while driving a car on busy highways or during emergency trips to a medical facility.

IMETRIK, which makes remote locking devices for cars, says that their products are set to turn off the ignition only in stationary cars. IMETRIK's anti-debt devices cost about $100 and have sold over $800 in the US. Skypatrol and Passtime are the market leaders.

Some remote ignition shutdown systems are equipped with GPS modules, using which creditors can track the location of debtors' vehicles and turn off the ignition in places that are considered the safest in the city. At the same time, the installation of equipment that monitors the movement can cause dissatisfaction with car owners, since in this case we are talking about an encroachment on their privacy.

Be that as it may, for people with bad credit, the use of such remote blockers with navigation equipment is the only way to buy a car on credit. Statistics show that about a quarter of the auto loans taken out in 2013 by Americans are classified as high-risk, because. these loans were taken by people who previously had arrears in payments.
