The motor "cut off" somehow suddenly, unexpectedly. Turning on the red flasher, I pulled over to the side of the road. The sudden failure of the motorcycle engine was explained simply: the fuel ran out. And it seemed that the fuel would be enough to get to the nearest gas station. In order not to be mistaken in the future, I decided to make a simple device that allows you to determine the amount of fuel in the tank without looking into it.

At first I wanted to equip my motorcycle with the same indicator as on a car: place a float connected to a resistor sensor in the tank, and determine the level using a galvanometer dial gauge. But, on reflection, he abandoned this idea: for sure, you can do something simpler.

You can't do without a float on the lever. So, we take it as the basis of the device. Well, if you put a drum with a scale on the axis of the lever, then you can easily control the level of fuel in the tank using it.

However, stop! This method is good for everyone, but for its implementation in the tank you will have to cut a hole, and quite a large one. To be honest, I didn't want to do this.

And suddenly it is necessary to refuse the pointer! What then? Put a patch on the tank! It's better to look for another solution.

Let's try to start with the control device. It is desirable that the dial has an hour type. And that means you'll need a tonic gear train - how else can you transmit a 99° rotation? In addition, the gear ratio of such a pair must be at least five units, that is, the bevel gear on the lever must have a larger diameter. Yes, you can’t stuff all this into it through the neck of the tank ... Is it really possible to refuse this scheme too!

And what, in fact, makes you use a conical pair! Wouldn't it be easier to take a spur gear from any spring-loaded toy and make your own gear sector, which is part of the crown gear!

The fuel gauge turned out to be quite simple, and besides, during its installation, the tank remained almost untouched - only one hole was drilled in it. I cut out all the details of the mechanism from sheet brass, but duralumin would also work. The only turned part is the central sleeve, and in principle it can be replaced with a threaded tube or a bolt drilled along the axis.

Do not be confused by the lack of dimensions on the drawing - they depend on the parameters of the central gear. Several pads: Kazakh for the manufacture of a gear sector. First, you need to cut the workpiece along the contour, and then, having applied a millimeter layer of plasticine to the arc, roll the central gear along it. The places of the prints are punched, after which the teeth are cut out with a needle file. Their height should be somewhat greater than on the central six. Now you need to carefully bend each tooth 90 °. After pre-assembly, run the gears in mutually, achieving smooth engagement, without jamming and backlash.

A few words about the calibration of the device. Lie a sheet of paper on the indicator cabinet and fill the tank with a liter can, marking the position of the arrow with a pencil. After completing this procedure, transfer the graduation to the scale cut out of plastic.
