Geranium (pelargonium). Legends, myths, history

Geranium (pelargonium)

The name "pelargonium" is derived from the ancient Greek word "pelagros" - a stork. It hints at the similarity of the elongated fruit of this plant with the elongated beak of a bird.

In Russia, traditionally, pelargonium is called room geranium, and in Bulgaria, due to its healing properties, it is called toast.

An oriental legend tells that a long time ago geranium was a weed and did not please people. Once the prophet Mohammed came down from the mountain and hung his sweaty cape on a geranium bush. The plant exposed the fabric to the sun's rays and quickly dried the clothes. The grateful prophet covered the geranium with beautiful flowers that exuded a delicate aroma.

It is also believed that snakes avoid those places where white geraniums bloom, so in the East, pots with these plants are often placed at the entrance to the house.

According to an ancient Slavic belief, geranium petals are able to attract the attention of a loved one. To do this, they need to be put in a linen bag and constantly carried with you. For many peoples of the world, fragrant geranium symbolizes vigor, health and strength.

Geranium. Interesting plant facts

Geranium (pelargonium)

Geranium is held in high esteem by the inhabitants of the countryside. This houseplant, beloved by many, belongs to the genus Pelargonium. Pelargonium in Greek means "crane". The flower got its name for the similarity of the pistil with a crane's beak.

This unpretentious houseplant blooms for several months a year. The seeds of the most famous types of zonal and ivy geraniums were brought to Holland in 1701 from South America, and in the XNUMXth century zonal geranium began to grow in all European gardens. The leading role in its cultivation belongs to the French gardener from Nancy, Paul Krempel.

In 1900, Krempel began to secretly propagate pelargonium with red flowers, and two years later he let all the plants bloom at the same time, which attracted everyone's attention to the flowers. Gardeners begin to intensively cultivate geranium-pelargonium, and until the First World War, it is one of the revered plants.

Then interest in flowers fades and reappears only in the fifties of the XX century.

Today, geraniums are the best decoration for windows, small gardens and lawns.

Geranium (pelargonium)

Pelargonium ivy is often called creeping, or climbing, because its hanging stems, dotted with beautiful flowers of various colors, are very similar to ivy leaves.

And the most common - fragrant pelargonium appeared in Europe about three hundred years ago and soon became a favorite indoor plant.

Currently, its varieties are known with the smell of mint, rose, lemon and even pepper. In rural areas, fragrant pelargonium is called fragrant geranium.

Traditional medicine believes that the aroma of geranium leaves relieves headaches and drives away fatigue.

It was not without reason that one had to hear such a story: “The only son of the poor peasants became seriously ill. No matter what the father and mother did, no matter what drugs they prepared, the patient did not rise. sick under them. The next morning, the illness vanished!

Whether this was the case in reality is difficult to judge. However, in Bulgaria and Belarus, geranium is called a toast, and not without reason - the leaves of the plant contain phytoncides that disinfect the air.

Geranium is able to bloom profusely and gratefully for many months of the year. It remains the best decoration for balconies, small front gardens and large parks, large squares and squares. The flower remains unchanged on rural windowsills, delighting people with an abundance of shapes and colors.

Geranium. Legends and tales

Geranium (pelargonium)

Probably everyone knows geranium without exception. But, as usual, not the one we are talking about. The geranium that grows in the garden, and the pelargonium that is on the windowsill (or in the garden, but as a flyer) are not at all the same thing, although they are relatives.

Our favorite is the geranium that grows without problems in the garden (there are many types and varieties): good, reliable, grateful, healthy ...

Once a shoemaker was returning home, to a German village, and he was ... how should I say this? not very strong in the legs. He walked and imagined what his wife would say to him now. Very well presented! Suddenly, in the field, I saw an amazing flower - a crail (geranium fruits resemble a crane's beak), plucked it: I wanted to appease my wife - he's not from evil, good people treated him, how can you refuse?

The wife opened the door and opened her mouth too, but the hubby held out the geranium to her in time - she breathed in the aroma, and calmed down, smiled, put the flower in the water, and he gave the roots. And everything worked out for them - the wife stopped grumbling, the husband stopped drinking, the garden in front of the house became even more beautiful than before. Geranium, she is!

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Smartphone and breakfast with flame retardants 23.12.2018

Researchers from the University of Toronto studied the composition of organophosphorus flame retardants that have entered the human body and compared them with possible sources of pollution. The results were quite interesting: it turned out that the substances found on the test subjects' mobile phones best correspond to the fire retardant metabolites found in the urine samples of the experiment participants.

There are two possible explanations for this unusual fact. On the one hand, the smartphone itself is capable of being a source of fire retardants, which are released from the plastic parts of the device case. Taking a smartphone in hand, say, while eating, we thereby bring some of these substances into the body.

On the other hand, the phone can act not only as a source, but also as a kind of mirror of what, roughly speaking, gets into our mouths. Since we hold a smartphone in our hands for quite a long time, all those substances that get on the skin of our hands from contact with various plastic objects end up on the surface of the mobile device.

Of course, it's all about the amount of substances, and it's not so much the fact that fire retardants get into the body that matters - we still can't be isolated from the environment - but their number. Therefore, from the fact that you hold a smartphone in your hands, and then eat an apple with the same hands, nothing terrible will happen - you should not hit chemophobia and run away from any plastics like from fire. Nevertheless, washing your hands before eating and not eating every day, without letting go of the gadget or sitting at the computer, in any case, will be more useful.
