A strange trail remains behind these sledges, rapidly descending from the mountain: the impression is that someone rode on one ski. And only on turns on the side is added a short stroke of the second track. We bring to your attention an unusual sports equipment, the construction of which is available to all lovers of breathtaking skiing from steep slopes. Made of wood, his sleigh combines the originality of design and simplicity of execution. To make them, you will need boards or thick plywood and a saw.

The secret of the sleigh is that they have not two, as usual, but three runners. Rather, one is the main one, and two are auxiliary; for what - the author himself will tell.

When descending on such a sled, you can achieve significant speeds. Even if there is only a thin layer of snow on the ground, the ski of the sled slides easily over it. Both extreme runners make it possible to maintain balance, and the sled is controlled by tilting the body in the required direction.

The material for the sled is plywood of the following thickness: seats, skids and crossbars - 10-12 mm, skis - 6 mm. The illustrations show the connection of individual parts with cut-outs, waterproof adhesive and wood screws of the appropriate diameter with a flat head. Holes in the details are made to facilitate the construction.

The manufacture of individual parts is recommended to start with skis. First you need to cut a plywood strip of the appropriate size and give it the necessary bend. To do this, take a towel, soak it in hot water and wrap the place of the future curvature. This makes the wood more pliable and easier to work with (using clamps or staples). Then you can proceed to the manufacture of rack-runners, sawn with some tolerance for processing, and crossbars.

Finally, the central and side racks are connected to the finished skis. The final operation is the installation of the seat, which is attached, like the skids, with the help of screws (self-tapping screws) and glue. On top of it, you can lay a soft pillow made of foam rubber, lined with tarpaulin or leatherette.

The assembled sledges are painted and varnished. It is useful to tar the lower surface of the skis, rub with wax or ointment.

Landslide under control 25.09.2006

British scientists came up with a sensor to control the landslide.

“Every year, hundreds of people die due to sudden landslides. And many of them could be saved if they knew that a disaster would happen in the near future. Even ten minutes is enough to evacuate the inhabitants of a house in danger. and feeds the device we have developed," says Dr. Neil Dixon from Lowborough University (UK).

The device consists of a pipe stuck into the slope with a sensor that is able to collect information about high-frequency sound vibrations. Usually they are created by deep particles of soil, which suddenly set in motion. The sensor sends information to the computer, which calculates the slope stability parameters. If it turns out to be small and a landslide is imminent, the system notifies of an impending disaster.

"The places of possible landslides are usually known. Sensors installed on such suspicious slopes will help to avoid disaster: block a dangerous road in time or take residents to a safe place," says Neil Dixon.
