This water sports equipment is somewhat reminiscent of windsurfing - a board sliding on the water under sail. It was invented by its inventor from the Canadian city of Quebec, David Lehman (U.S. patent No. 4.708.076). He did not name his invention. But we think that if you like the projectile, you will come up with a name for it yourself. And we are sure it will attract the attention of thrill-seekers. And who knows, maybe soon we will witness a new type of competition. Of course, not in speed - a round board is hardly capable of cutting through the water faster than windsurfing. It will help to identify the strongest in a kind of water freestyle - the ability to perform the most difficult dizzying tricks on the water, similar to those that skiers have learned to do. And this, we note, will not be easy. Try to stand on a shaky round float and even manage it, holding a round sail in your hands.

The patent publication does not disclose the manufacturing technology of the new projectile. Therefore, we will try to think it over, refine it ourselves, using the technical capabilities and materials that are most accessible in our conditions. But even here we do not recommend strictly following our description. Everyone is free to make their own additions, changes. Only in such a competition will the most successful option be born.

According to our estimates, for the manufacture of the projectile, plywood 10 mm thick, pieces of foam, rubber hose and bolts with washers and M6 nuts will be required. From these materials we will make a body.

We determined the size of the projectile, based on the fact that the mass of the athlete will be 50 kg. Moreover, they doubled it to provide a double buoyancy factor. The mass of the projectile itself and the sail are also taken into account. As a result, all this amounted to approximately 130 kg. This means that a projectile submerged completely under water will displace 130 cubic meters. dm of water. Using this technique, it will not be difficult for everyone to recalculate the dimensions of the projectile according to their own weight.

The figure (see its lower left part) shows a projectile without a protective shell covering it. The base of the body is made up of 12 ribs cut from plywood. We do not provide their sweeps, since this work is simple and clearly presented by the artist. We only note that it requires accuracy and precision in execution. We advise you to take the time and cut out life-size templates from cardboard. They will simplify further work, and the product itself will turn out to be of higher quality.

Put the templates on a sheet of plywood, economically placing them on the material, circle the contour with a soft pencil, give an allowance of 2-3 millimeters and carefully cut out the details with a hand saw. At the intersection points, first mark and then make cuts, as shown in view B.

Connect the parts together and make sure that the work is done well. At this stage, if a mistake is made, it is not too late to detect and correct it. If there is no doubt, connect the parts with glue. We recommend using only epoxy resin - durable, and most importantly, waterproof glue. Carefully lubricate the docking points and connect the parts. Spilled drops of glue, while they are still in a liquid state, can be easily removed with a dry cloth.

Let the plywood frame dry, and you start making square foam inserts. Well, if you can get a dense foam. But if it is not there, you can use material made from granules, for example, from TV packages. They will need 37 pieces. According to the drawing, the length and width of the liners are the same - 190x190 mm. But the thickness is different and depends on the cell in which they will be installed. Calculations show that it will be required: 12 pieces 80 mm thick, 16 - 120 mm thick and 9 - 140 mm thick.

Of course, it is not easy to produce an insert with precise dimensions from a packaging material of such a complex profile. So let's simplify the task. It is not at all necessary to cut each element from a whole piece. Can be made from several, thinner ones. And connect them together with epoxy glue.

So, all the inserts are ready. Define a cell in the frame for each. If a slight adjustment is required, use a rasp. And try to control your work more often so as not to grind off excess material. The liner should enter its cell tightly, without distortions and cracks. And in order not to confuse, number the cells of the frame and liners.

Now, carefully lubricating the side surfaces with glue, install the liners in their places. Let the glue dry. And start finishing the case. With a sharp knife, carefully cut off the foam protruding beyond the frame. Do this work slowly, checking the templates.

The final finishing is done with a rasp, and then with sandpaper - first large, then medium, and finally fine.

The body of the projectile will become much stronger if it is covered with a protective shell on the outside. Here you can use thin fiberglass, and if it is not available, tarpaulin. Cut ribbons 100-120 mm wide. Apply their first layer on the glued surface end-to-end - one to one. The second layer is applied perpendicular to the first, but with an overlap of 7-10 mm.

While the glue dries, cut out a 600 mm disc with a hacksaw from plywood - this is the support platform. Attach a ring of rubber hose with a diameter of 6 mm and a length of 40 mm to it with bolts and nuts with an M1886 thread. How to do this is shown in the figure - section B-B. So that the plywood veneer does not crack from moisture, thoroughly soak the entire surface under the hose with hot drying oil.

Attach the finished platform strictly in the center with epoxy glue to the body.

Finishes painting. First, prime the entire surface of the body in several layers. There may be three or four of them, but be sure to clean after each primer by sanding the surface. A bright nitro enamel is applied to the primer in two or three layers. How to paint a projectile - it all depends on your imagination.

Support plates for legs - corrugated rubber from skis. Glue them inside the rubber circle.

The sail is the second part of our projectile (see the view on the lower right side of the picture). Its frame is easiest to make from a duralumin gymnastic ring, which can be bought at a sports store. And to make it more convenient to hold it, attach two curved handles to the ring. For strength, connect them using bushings and bolts with M6 nuts, as shown in the section G-D.

The fabric is stretched over the tubular ring. It can be thin nylon, bright silk or plastic wrap. True, the service life of the film is much shorter.

Spread the fabric on the floor. Put a ring on it and, stepping back from the outer edge of 10 cm, draw a circle. Cut out on it. Overcast the outer edge of the fabric so that the threads do not stretch. If you managed to get the capron, the operation will be simplified. Slightly melt the edge by touching it with the tip of a heated soldering iron.

Then the fabric is stretched over the ring, the edges are folded inward and sewn to the base with a thick nylon thread with a needle.

Although the surface of the sail is small, a strong gust of wind can tear it out of your hands. To prevent this from happening, tie a nylon cord to the handles of the sail, as shown in the splash screen.

How to use the projectile is easy to understand. Climbing onto the disc, rest your feet on the hose. Catch the wind with a sail - and go ahead ... First, learn to sail strictly with the wind, then with tacks - at an angle to the wind. The highest skill is to learn how to perform different figures. Which? This will tell your skill and imagination.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

Analog quantum simulators 13.02.2023

Classical computers are not suitable for solving new fundamental problems in the field of physics and beyond. In the future, universal and error-tolerant quantum computers can help scientists with this, but such will not appear soon. However, if the problem cannot be calculated, then why not do experiments? An analog quantum simulator can become a constructor of the quantum world, which will help to reveal the most mysterious physics beyond theory.

Researchers from Stanford University in the United States and University College Dublin (UCD) in Ireland published a paper in the journal Nature Physics in which they talked about creating a new type of highly specialized analog computer (more precisely, a simulator). Scientists have presented one element of such a "computer" - two specially connected nano-sized metal-semiconductor components built into an electronic circuit.

The proposed solution imitates the interaction of two elementary particles, in this case, atoms and electrons. The simulation is so deep that the model retains all the quantum properties of atoms from interatomic interaction to the physical properties of particles. By scaling the platform - building matter atom to atom, like a constructor from Lego blocks - one can achieve the modeling of matter with the given properties and look at its reaction when interacting with other matter and at changing its properties. It is not possible today to calculate this on a large-scale model, and such a simulation is on the shoulder.

For example, theoretical physicists do not yet see patterns for a targeted search for materials for high-temperature superconductivity. Modern computers cannot help them in their calculations, especially since they have to search blindly. Modeling the behavior of matter on analog quantum simulators could open the way to this holy grail for energy and beyond. This will put the theory aside and test many ideas in practice.

Actually, analog quantum simulators of a new type can help in moving towards universal quantum computers. For example, there is an idea to use such quasiparticles as parafermions (groups of electrons with a special interaction) as qubits. The charges of electrons in this state (Z3) are equal to 1/3 of the usual charge. In laboratory conditions, scientists have not yet created such particles, and the proposed simulator model made it possible to simulate them after appropriately adjusting the voltage on the electrodes. In fact, scientists in the laboratory created matter that did not exist in nature before. And after all it can be studied after that!

“By scaling up a quantum simulator from two to many nanoscale components, we hope to be able to simulate much more complex systems that modern computers cannot handle,” said one of the authors of the work. “This could be the first step towards finally unraveling some of the most enigmatic mysteries of our quantum universe."
