Sort by: Podbel (Andromeda)

Family: Heathers (Ericaceae)

Origin: Europe, Asia, North America

Area: Podbel ordinary grows in the northern regions of Eurasia and North America, mainly in swamps, tundra, damp forests and the shores of lakes and rivers.

Chemical composition: The leaves contain tannins, flavonoids, catechins and anthocyanins.

Economic value: Podbel ordinary is planted in landscape design to create hedges and for landscaping ponds. Also in folk medicine, common podbel is used as a diuretic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and antibacterial agent. However, it can be poisonous if used incorrectly.

Legends, myths, symbolism: Podbelus vulgaris, also known as Andromeda polyfolia, has some interesting legends and myths associated with it: In ancient Greek mythology, Andromeda was a princess who was chained to a rock to please the sea monster Ketos. But Perseus, the hero who received the task to kill Ketos, freed her and married her. Therefore, some types of andromeda are called "andomeda", in honor of this legend. In some cultures, andromeda polyfolia is considered a symbol of longing and grief. In folk medicine, andromeda has been used to treat depression and nervous disorders.

Podbel ordinary

The scientific generic name Andromeda was given to the plant for the beauty of flowers in honor of the beautiful Andromeda, the heroine of the ancient Greek myth about Perseus.

Evergreen undersized shrub from 15 to 60 cm high. The rhizome is long, in the form of a cord, common to many above-ground shoots. Podbela, like most other plants from the Heather family, is characterized by mycorrhiza - a mutually beneficial symbiosis (mutualism) of fungal mycelium with plant roots. Stem slightly branched, smooth, creeping, rooting; shoots are hard, ascending, red-brown.

The leaves are lanceolate, with the edges wrapped down; dark green above, shiny, dull white below with a wax coating, leathery, 1 to 5 cm long and 2 to 8 mm wide. Podbel grows slowly, with an annual growth of only about 3 cm.

The flowers are pink (sometimes of a different color - from white to dark red), drooping. Collected in several pieces on long reddish pedicels located at the ends of last year's shoots. Petals fused. The corolla is ovoid or spherical-jug-shaped (glass-shaped), pubescent inside, which prevents small insects from penetrating the flower. Stamens ten, with red anthers and appendages in the form of two small sharp horns, one column.

Anthers open only after the stigma has matured and cross-pollination has taken place, but their opening occurs only at the moment when a large insect is inside the flower. On the way to the nectar, it shakes the stamens, touching their appendages, and the anthers, opening up, shower the insect with pollen.

Podbel ordinary

Flowering occurs in April-June (sometimes it blooms again in autumn). Podbel produces honey unsuitable for human consumption.

The fruit is a five-celled spherical-flattened berry-shaped box, which opens along the backs of its constituent carpels. The fruits ripen in August-September.

Distributed in the forest and tundra zone of Eurasia and in the northwest of North America.

Grows in peat bogs and damp coniferous forests. In the mountains it rises to the lower strip of the Alpine belt.

Podbela leaves and flowers contain a poisonous glycoside - andromedotoxin (acetylandromedol, rhodotoxin), as well as tannic phenolic compounds - tannins.

Podbel is a poisonous plant, its leaves and flowers contain the glycoside andromedotoxin (other names for the substance are acetylandromedol, rhodotoxin). This polyhydroxylated cyclic diterpene, which is characteristic of many plants of the Heather family, is a neurotoxin; its toxicity is due to the fact that it disrupts the functioning of cellular receptors, first it excites the central nervous system, and then it depresses it, which can lead to death.

Podbel is used as a medicinal plant in folk medicine. It also has an attractive appearance during flowering, as well as during the growing season, therefore it is quite actively used in ornamental gardening, especially in rock gardens, where it is usually planted along with other heathers.

Another traditional use of podbel is the preparation of dyes from it. The shoots and leaves of podbel contain a sufficiently large amount of tannin, which dyes fabrics black.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Smart driver's seat responds to driver gestures 15.08.2015

Scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research (Fraunhofer-Institut fur Silicatforschung ISC), as well as the company Isringhausen, which specializes in car seats, presented a fully functional joint development.

We are talking about a smart driver's seat, which is configured not with levers and buttons, but with brush gestures. The chair is equipped with a number of sensors, and the place where they are located is covered with a special synthetic material. To activate the sensors, the driver must touch the area on the side of the seat with their hand. This prevents accidental activation of the seat adjustment system. Then, using a series of intuitive gestures, the driver will be able to move the seat closer to the steering wheel or move it away, change the seating height, the angle of the backrest, the degree of lumbar support, and so on.

The creators of the chair claim that the whole process resembles the use of a touch screen in mobile devices, only the movements are more exaggerated. By adjusting the seat for themselves, the driver can save the settings in memory and return the seat to this position if the car is used by several people.

Initially, the system was designed for professional truck drivers who spend most of their lives on the road. But the developers hope that a variety of automakers will be interested in such a solution.

The prototype of the smart driver's seat will be presented to visitors at the 65th IAA Cars 2015 international commercial vehicle show, which will be held in the second half of September in Frankfurt.
