Laconism. Laconic brevity

Ancient Greece
Ancient Greece

Phraseologism: Laconism. Laconic brevity.

Meaning: Simple, concise, laconic.

Origin: The Spartans, who inhabited the southeastern part of the Peloponnese, called Laconia, differed, according to ancient authors, in speech, the characteristic features of which were simplicity and brevity. This form of expression came to be called "laconism". The earliest monument in which the turnover "laconic brevity" is found is Plato's dialogue "Protagoras". This expression, put by Plato into the mouth of Socrates, was probably already current in that era. "The harsh laconism of the telegraph remains ruthless." (P. A. Vyazemsky Poli. sobr. soch., vol. VII, St. Petersburg. 1882, p. 214). "In his office, Semyon Vasilyevich found a laconic note on his desk." (Mom-Sibiryak, Mother-stepmother)

Random phraseology:

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Solid state batteries for electric vehicles 10.05.2018

The Consortium for Lithium Ion Battery Technology and Evaluation Center (LIBTEC) announced plans to create advanced batteries for electric cars of the future.

The new organization was formed with the support of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan. The initiative has already received government funding of 1,6 billion yen (approximately $14 million).

The consortium includes well-known technology giants and automakers such as Panasonic, Toyota Motor, Nissan Motor, Honda Motor, GS Yuasa, as well as Toray Industries and Asahi Kasei.

The main goal of the participants of the initiative is the creation of advanced high-capacity solid-state batteries. Unlike standard lithium-ion batteries, their solid-state counterparts do not use a liquid, but a solid electrolyte. This simplifies the manufacturing process. At the same time, the safety of use is increased, since such power supplies do not leak. In addition, the number of components is reduced, the cost is reduced, and efficiency is increased.

It is planned that by 2025, the project will create a new type of battery that will allow electric vehicles to cover a distance of up to 550 km on a single charge. In another five years, batteries should appear that can provide a power reserve of up to 800 km without recharging.
