Desmodium twisted - Desmodium intortum (Mill) Urb. - one of the common legume fodder grasses. It is used as a pasture plant, as well as for hay and silage. For a year it gives 60-120 tons of green mass, or 12,5-30 tons of dry mass, from 1 ha.

The leaves contain (on a dry matter basis) 23,6% protein, 6,1% fat, 24,5% fiber, 36,7% BEV and 9,1% ash; in stems - respectively 8,9; 1,6; 43,6; 38,3 and 7,5%. Protein digestibility 54-69%.

Comes from South America.

Distributed in culture in the humid and semi-humid tropics and subtropics of America, Africa, Australia, Japan.

Desmodium twisted - creeping, climbing plant with a deep-penetrating root system.

Leaves are 2-7 cm long and 1,5-5,5 cm wide.

Inflorescence - brush. Flowers of various colors, from lilac to pink.

Beans are narrow, contain 8-12 seeds. The weight of 1000 seeds is about 2 g. There are many (up to 75%) hard seeds in the crop.

Desmodium twisted is demanding on heat and moisture. It grows on the plains and in the mountains at an altitude of up to 2500 m above sea level. The optimum temperature for vegetation is 25-30 °C. It is grown in areas with an annual rainfall of 875 to 3475 mm. In conditions of strong moisture, it is affected by diseases and pests. Drought resistant.

It succeeds in many soils, but prefers well-drained and fairly fertile soils. Withstands high acidity, but is unstable to salinity.

Desmodium twisted grows well in a mixture with guinea, elephant and treacle grass, kikuya, lying rosemary, and also in the aisles of corn. In grass mixtures, it is sown with beans, soybeans and other legumes.

Under the main tillage, it is recommended to apply 55-60 kg of phosphorus and potassium.

Small desmodium seeds require careful soil preparation. Before sowing, the seeds are scarified and treated with nitragin. Good results are obtained by soaking in technical sulfuric acid for 5 minutes.

Sow in rows or scattered. The seeding rate is from 1 to 10 kg (usually 2-3 kg) per 1 ha. Seeding depth is not more than 1 cm. Sowing is done at the beginning of the rainy season with seeders or manually, sometimes with the help of aircraft. Vegetative propagation is also possible by planting stem cuttings according to the scheme 25-100x25-100cm.

During the care period, post-sowing rolling is used, weeds are controlled and fertilizers are applied.

Mowing and grazing is carried out every 8-12 weeks at a height of 7,5-15 cm. The highest yields of green mass are obtained with an interval between cuttings of 3 months. For seed purposes, harvesting begins when 30-50% of the beans ripen. Seed yield is from 0,1 to 0,5 t/ha.
