Cerberus mangas

Cerbera mangas is a highly poisonous evergreen tree, a species of the genus Cerbera (Cerbera) of the Kutrovye family (Apocynaceae).

Cerbera mangas is an evergreen shrub or more commonly a small tree reaching 1-20m tall with abundant white latex. Leaves on petioles 1-5 cm long, the plates themselves are oblong or obovate-lanceolate, 8-23x2,5-7 cm, with a blunt or pointed end.

The inflorescence reaches 20 cm in length and width, with fragrant flowers. Bracts quickly fall off. Corolla with a pure white limb and a red-pink tube. The calyx is divided into ovate-quadrangular or ovate-triangular sepals. Stamens 1 mm long, with lanceolate anthers up to 2,7 mm long. Pistil 1 mm long, stigma up to 2 mm in diameter.

The fruit is ovoid, green, bright red when ripe, about 9x6x5 cm.

The natural range of Cerberus Mangas is the islands of Malesia up to Tuamotu, as well as the Seychelles and Comoros.

Cerberus latex is used in the medicine of some peoples of Malesia, in particular, to induce vomiting in case of poisoning. It contains the strongest cardiac glycoside cerberin, capable of causing death in large quantities. Inhalation of Cerberus fumes can cause severe discomfort. Filipino fishermen used plant seeds to kill fish.

The peoples of East Africa and Madagascar used Cerberus seeds to prove the guilt of the defendant. If, after eating a few seeds of a plant, he remained alive, he was considered innocent, but the one who gave his life was guilty.

Dried leaves of Cerberus in folk medicine are applied to places of skin irritation.

Cerberus fruits look a bit like mango fruits (hence the specific name), but they are very bitter in taste. There are known cases of poisoning of people who confused them.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Perfumes that replace coffee 07.02.2020

Dutch scientists have created perfumes that increase efficiency. The development of a wonderful perfume with the speaking name No.10 Spirit de Travail ("working spirit") belongs to the Dutch company Spaces.

The project was based on a study by University of Arizona professor Gary Schwartz, who back in the 1980s said that smells can be used to cope with bad mood, stress and anger.

The creators of the fragrance guarantee that its inhalation directly affects the increase in concentration, attention, and efficiency.

Perfumers have been wrestling with the essence recipe for a long time, studying research on the effects of smells on people. As a result, the "elixir" gathered from the aromas of cinnamon, vetiver, sandalwood and Calabrian bergamot.
