Basic scientific information, legends, myths, symbolism

Genus Edible coleus (Coleus) belongs to the family Lamiaceae. Plants originate from tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia and Australia.

The chemical composition of the plant is heterogeneous and depends on the species. Some species contain alkaloids, flavonoids and terpenoids.

Edible coleus are used in cooking as a spice and flavoring. Also, some species are widely used in medicine and cosmetics due to their beneficial properties, such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial and antiallergic effects.

Legends, myths, symbolism: Edible coleus can symbolize nutritional value through their ability to be tasty and nutritious. Edible coleus can symbolize diversity due to the different species and variety of flowers they represent. Also, edible coleus can be a symbol of transformation due to their ability to change their appearance depending on the environment. In general, edible coleus can be a symbol of nutrition, beauty, health, sustainability, diversity, and transformation.

edible coleus

The genus Coleus includes mainly ornamental plants with beautiful leaves, often grown as indoor plants.

However, there are also edible coleus. They belong to a few species, of which the most important is Coleus rotundifolius Chev. et Perrot. This tuberous species is cultivated in India, Ceylon, Java, Mauritius, Madagascar and many parts of tropical Africa.

The plant is perennial, with fibrous branched roots; The rhizome has tubers arranged in pairs. Stems creeping, 25 cm high, square section, fleshy. The leaves are opposite, petiolate, oval-scapular, green-yellow.

The flowers are small, pale blue, arranged in clusters.

The most common varieties of this species are: Var. Javanica (Coleus tuberosus Benth., Plectranthus tuberosus Blume, C Parriflorus Benth). - stems are almost smooth; the leaves are very fleshy, more shiny on the outside. Tubers are oval, with black skin. Cultivated in Java.

Var. nigra (Plectranthus Coppini Cornu, Coleus Coppini Heckel, C. salagensis Gtir.) - almost smooth stems; wine-red leaves, shaggy on both sides; tubers are oval, the size of potatoes, black. Cultivated in Sudan under the name Oussou-ni-fing.

Var. rubra (Plectranthus ternatus Sims., Coleus ternatus Cheval., germanea rotundifolia Poiret, Solenostemon densiflorus Benth.) - densely pubescent stems; leaves opposite by three, hairy; tubers are oval, 2 cm long and 1 cm in diameter, grayish or yellow pink. Cultivated in Madagascar.

Var. alba - many stems, they are almost smooth; leaves are always opposite, oblong-oval, spatulate at the base; tubers are oval, almost white or cream. Cultivated in the Niger River region.

Similarly to the first species in tropical Africa, for the sake of tubers, another type of coleus is also cultivated - Coleus Dazo Chevalier.

It has fleshy rhizomes, palmately branched into cylindrical, yellowish-white, finger-sized lobes. During flowering, the plant reaches 1,5 m in height. Leaves are long-toothed, semi-sessile, opposite. The flowers are yellow.

edible coleus

C. longouassiensis Cheval. has tubers larger than C. Dazo, cream-colored, up to 20 cm long, almost without fibers.

In Ethiopia, another type of coleus grows - C. edulis Vatue, which also uses fleshy tubers that resemble potatoes in shape and taste.

In Natal, the food is the clubs of Plectranthus esculentus N. Br., a plant very close to the yellow-flowered coleus.

It is also called kaffir potato.

Edible coleus, Coleus. Tips for growing, harvesting and storing

cultivated and wild plants. Legends, myths, symbolism, description, cultivation, methods of application

While many types of coleus are not edible, some can be used in cooking.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing edible coleus:

Cultivation:

  • Edible coleus grows best in semi-shady places where there is plenty of light but they are protected from direct sunlight.
  • They prefer fertile, well-drained soil that should be moderately moist.
  • Plants need regular watering, but do not overwater the soil, this can lead to root rot.
  • Coleus can grow up to 60 cm tall, so be sure to give them enough space.

Workpiece:

  • Edible coleus leaves can be used in salads, appetizers, and other dishes.
  • Cut the leaves from the plant, choosing the largest and healthiest ones. When doing this, try not to damage the stem or leave bare roots.
  • Before use, rinse the leaves under cold water and remove any yellow or damaged areas.
  • In addition, coleus leaves can be dried or frozen for later use.

Storage:

  • Freshly cut coleus leaves can be stored in the refrigerator in a plastic bag for several days.
  • The leaves can also be frozen or dried for later use.

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>
