Marshmallow (sugar root), Sium sisarum L. Classification, synonyms, botanical description, nutritional value, cultivation

Marshmallow (sugar root)

Synonyms: S. sisarum v. vulgare Alef., Seseli sisarum Crantz., Pimpinella sisarum Jessen, Carum sisarum Baill., Selenium sisarum EHL Krause.

Names: fr. chervis, chirouis, giroles; English skirret; German Zuckerwurzel; fl. suikerwortel; Dan., sukkerrod; Swedish, akta socker rot; it., sisaro; Spanish chirivia tudesca; port, chirivia; Polish korzen cukrowy.

The plant is unknown in the wild. Cultivated by the Romans.

perennial; the stem 50-70 cm high has creeping underground shoots; pinnate leaves, with 2-3 pairs of leaflets; leaflets ovate-lanceolate, 2-7 cm long and 1-3 cm wide, sawtooth-toothed. Umbrellas with 10-15 rays, 3-5 cm across; petals are white, obovatecordate, about 1 mm long.

The fruit is 4 mm long and 2,5 mm wide. Each plant has 10-15 thickened roots about 20-30 cm long. The roots are very rich in sugar (6-8%). Before the spread of potatoes in Europe and Russia, the sugar root was of great importance in the culture.

Sugar root can be propagated by pieces of roots and division of bushes. Sowing is done in early spring. In order for the roots to be long and even, deep tillage is necessary.

The plant is demanding on light, so well-lit areas should be chosen for its culture.

Seeds, like many umbrella ones, germinate slowly, so it is advisable to mix them with a small amount of fast-growing seeds (lettuce, radish), that is, use lighthouse crops.

Marshmallow (sugar root)

The feeding area is 20x20 cm, but the square arrangement of plants is inconvenient for processing, so it is better to use band crops. If flower shoots appear in the first year of life, then they must be cut out. Sowing can be done at the end of summer (August), then by the middle of next year there will be a harvest.

For seed purposes, plants can be left in the ground for the winter (even in the middle lane), but they can be dug up (it is more convenient to select the best ones) and stored in conventional storage facilities.

The roots are eaten, which are very tasty, sugary and somewhat mealy.

The disadvantage of the vegetable is: firstly, the fragility of the roots and, secondly, the difficulty of cleaning the root crop from the woody core.

cultivated and wild plants. Legends, myths, symbolism, description, cultivation, methods of application

Marshmallow, also known as sugar root, Sium sisarum, is a perennial plant in the Umbelliferae family that is grown as a vegetable crop.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing marshmallow:

Cultivation:

  • Marshmallow is best grown in a sunny or semi-shady location with fertile soil.
  • The plant needs regular watering and loosening the soil.
  • Seeds can be sown outdoors in spring or autumn, with a distance between plants of about 30-40 cm.
  • Marshmallow can grow both outdoors and in pots.

Workpiece:

  • You can collect the handrail in autumn or winter, when the roots become mature.
  • Root crops should be thoroughly cleaned from the ground and stored in a cool, dry and dark place until use.
  • Root vegetables can be stored in sand or other light materials to prevent them from drying out.

Storage:

  • Marshmallow root can be stored in a cool, dry and dark place until use.
  • It is best to use freshly picked root vegetables within a few months, as over time they can lose their flavor and medicinal properties.

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Water battery for electric vehicles 14.01.2023

Electric vehicles flooded with salt water during hurricanes and other natural disasters are at risk of fire because they can corrode the battery and cause a short circuit. But scientists at the University of Central Florida have developed technology that can prevent electric vehicles from catching fire and cut battery charging time to three minutes.

Currently, electric cars are predominantly equipped with lithium-ion batteries with an organic electrolyte in their composition. However, such electrolytes are too volatile and can easily flare up due to overcharging, overheating, and water corroding the battery case.

Scientists have created a so-called "water" battery - replacing the organic electrolyte with salt water to create a safer and more efficient battery.

This is not the first attempt at using salt water as an electrolyte, but previous concepts have suffered from low energy output, slow charge times, poor stability and corrosion. The Californians have improved the technology by using naturally occurring metal ions found in salt water, such as sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium, to create a double cation battery that holds more energy. This allowed them to cope with the slowness of previous water-based battery designs. In addition, scientists managed to achieve the main thing - the ability to charge such a battery almost at lightning speed (in 3 minutes).

Researchers have developed a XNUMXD zinc-copper anode containing a thin zinc oxide protective layer on top to solve problems with instability, dendrite growth and corrosion. The new XNUMXD nanostructured surface of the copper-zinc alloy allows researchers to precisely control electrochemical reactions, thus improving battery stability and fast charging capability.
