Shrub or low tree 3-7 m high, sometimes with thorns.

Young shoots are silvery, the rest are gray. Leaves linear or oblong-lanceolate, lanceolate-oval or ovate, with petioles, silvery. Flowers very fragrant, solitary, in leaf axils; perianth silvery-white with yellowish veins, yellow inside. The fruit is drupe-shaped, oval or ovoid-spherical, reddish-yellowish.

The leaves contain ascorbic acid (0,14-0,35%), alkaloids, tannins and dyes in the bark, and a pleasantly smelling essential oil (0,3%) in the flowers. Plants aged 5-12 years intensively secrete gum.

Loja fruits are used for food, they are eaten fresh and ground into flour, which is added to bread, soups and other dishes; used to make wine with a peculiar spicy aroma. Fruits can be stored for a long time without processing.

Young shoots are silvery, the rest are gray. Leaves 5-8 cm long, linear or oblong-lanceolate, lanceolate-oval or ovate, with petioles, peaked, narrowed towards the base, grayish-green above, silvery-white below from silvery scales covering both sides of the leaf.

Flowers up to 1 cm long, very fragrant, solitary, in leaf axils. Perianth silvery-white with yellowish veins, yellow inside. Blooms in June.

Propagated by seeds, cuttings, layering, also renewed by shoots (does not give root offspring). Plants aged 5-12 years intensively secrete gum.

The fruit is a drupe about 1 cm long, oval or ovoid-spherical, reddish-yellowish with a silvery-white, sweetish-mealy edible pericarp. The fruits ripen in August-October.

South European-Central Asian species. Wildly grows in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, Central Asia, Asia Minor, Iran. It is found in the European part of Russia, in the North Caucasus, in Western Siberia and the Altai Territory.

It grows on hilly sands and in floodplain thickets. It is very drought-resistant, almost does not suffer from hot dry winds in the southeastern steppe regions. It is unpretentious to soils; tolerates significant soil salinity, successfully grows on chestnut-alkaline, dark chestnut and light chestnut soils. When filling the trunk with sand, it forms abundant adventitious roots. It tolerates dust, soot, gas very well.

  • To strengthen immunity: Angustifolium leaf tincture can help boost immunity. Steep 1 tablespoon of crushed leaves in 1 cup boiling water. Let it brew for 10-15 minutes, then strain and drink 1/2 cup 2 times a day.
