Zinnia the graceful

Zinnia graceful is an annual herbaceous plant, a species of the genus Zinnia (Zinnia) of the Asteraceae family.

Zinnia graceful, along with hybrid petunia, is one of the most popular flower crops; is one of the ten most common flyers around the world. In the USA, it is the most famous among the zinnia species, it is especially popular and is considered the national flower.

Zinnia graceful is an annual herbaceous plant. At home, this species grows up to 1 m in height, has simple white, pink and orange inflorescences.

The stem is straight, 30-120 cm high, mostly not branched (except for undersized dwarf varieties), rounded in cross section, green or purple-greenish outside, densely pubescent with large, hard, simple colorless hairs. The shoots of the first order significantly outgrow the main one, so that in the future it becomes almost invisible after flowering. All shoots end in an inflorescence - a basket. Some variety groups form a large number of flowering shoots of the second and third orders, while others have fewer.

Leaves opposite, sessile, amplexicaul, oblong-ovate, entire, with 3-5 almost parallel veins, shortly pointed or obtuse at the apex, 5-7 cm long and 3-4,5 cm wide. The leaf surface is rough from densely covering it with hard hairs. The hairs are simple, of two types: the first are small, densely covering the leaf blade, the second are larger, sparse, saber-curved, hard, pressed to the leaf surface. The upper leaves are smaller and longer pointed.

The flower-bearing stem under the basket is thickened. The bed of the basket is blunt-conical, protruding especially at the end of flowering, with keeled navicular scales.

Inflorescences - baskets, 5-16 cm in diameter, simple, semi-double or double. The flowers in the inflorescence are tubular and reed. Non-double inflorescences have one row of reed flowers, semi-double - from two to five rows of reed flowers, double - more rows. The doubleness of inflorescences in zinnia is false, it is not associated with the transformation of generative organs into petals, but depends only on the number of reed flowers in the inflorescence. In addition, the inflorescences of one plant do not always have the same number of rows of reed flowers. With prolonged drought, terry falls

The involucre of modified apical leaves is cup-shaped, tiled. Involucre leaflets arranged in several rows, grassy, oblong-oval in shape, 0,6 to 1,3 cm long, obtuse with a dark border in the upper part.

In reed flowers, the corolla is interpetalous, consists of one plate - a tongue with three teeth at the end. Flowers unisexual - female. The tongues are elongated-oval, up to 4 cm long, up to 1,5 cm wide, their size decreases from the periphery to the center. Ovary inferior of two carpels, unilocular.

Marginal flowers are false-lingual, of various colors, except for blue and blue, sometimes with a white or yellow border around the edge.

Tubular flowers are small, bisexual, proterandric, consist of 5 fused petals about 1,2 cm long, 0,4-0,6 cm wide, with 5 small teeth along the edge. The flower has 5 stamens, the filaments are free; anthers fused into anther tube surrounding style. The anthers open with a longitudinal slit into the cavity of the tube, where all the pollen spills out. The pistil has a style with a two-lobed stigma. At the ends of the lobes there is pubescence in the form of a brush (striking hairs). During the ripening period, the lobes diverge and the stigmas become capable of receiving pollen. Disk flowers are tubular, yellow, orange, rarely purple.

Pollen is two-celled, rounded. Known genes that cause male sterility, which is used to obtain seeds of heterotic hybrids without castration. The first such hybrid was obtained in 1960. To date, a large number of heterotic hybrids have been created, which are triploids obtained from crossing tetraploids with diploids.

Natural crossing of zinnia graceful with other types of zinnia is not observed, however, such hybrids were obtained indirectly. In particular, using embryo culture technology, a hybrid of Zinnia peruviana L. x Zinnia elegans Jacq. was created, in which, under normal conditions, the endosperm degenerates a week after fertilization, and the embryo dies from lack of nutrition.

Blossoms in June - August, possibly also until frost. Seeds ripen approximately two months after the start of flowering, however, depending on the variety, the duration of the seed ripening period is different. Zinnia is a cross-pollinated plant, the norm of spatial isolation is at least 200 meters

Seeds are large, 8-14 mm long and 2-6 mm wide, strongly flattened. Their shape is very diverse - from narrow wedge-shaped to broad-ovate. The surface of the achene is rough, covered with tubercles, on its underside there is a keeled rib. Coloring - dark gray, brownish or brown.

The number of chromosomes in somatic cells is 2n = 24.

The species is distributed in southern Mexico. It grows on rocky ledges of canyons, at an altitude of 1500 m above sea level.

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

New life for airships 21.06.2000

It is possible that long-forgotten airships will appear in the air in the near future. By order of the European Space Agency, a project has been created for a new aircraft, the scope of which should be observation and aerial photography of the area, relaying communication signals and conducting rescue operations.

One of the advantages of the new apparatus is the low cost of its construction and operation, which should make the use of the apparatus profitable. "Suspended" over a densely populated area, the device can replace television towers and partially satellites for relaying a communication signal over an area of 100 km2. The airship will resemble the German "zeppelins" in shape - huge cigar-shaped balloons 220 m long and 55 m in diameter with a cabin below. It, unlike the devices of the early 20th century, will be able to rise to a height of over XNUMX km without interfering with either aircraft or satellites.

The apparatus will not have a rigid internal structure. The lifting force will be provided by an elastic tank made of special plastic materials with increased resistance to ultraviolet radiation, filled with helium.

The plan is to install a solar-powered engine on the airship, which will power a huge propeller and other systems that ensure its maneuverability and remote control from the ground.
