Perennial marsh herbaceous plant with a long creeping rhizome and a rising top, of the shift family (Menyanthaceae).

The leaves are alternate on long petioles, up to 17-30 cm long, the leaf blade is deeply three-parted. The flower-bearing stem is leafless, 15-35 cm in height.

The flowers are five-membered, white or pink in a dense apical raceme, 3-7 cm long. The fruit is a single-celled, almost spherical multi-seeded boll, the seeds are elliptical, smooth.

Blooms in May-June.

Range and habitats. It grows in the temperate climate of the Northern Hemisphere, from the arctic to subtropical zones of Europe, Asia and America.

It occurs on peaty and mineral soils, on sphagnum bogs, along the banks of stagnant and slowly flowing reservoirs, along the marshy outskirts of overgrown lakes and oxbow lakes. Watch can be one of the components of the grass-shrub layer of bogs, wet forests and meadows.

Three-leaved watch

Chemical composition. As a medicinal raw material, a watch leaf (lat. Folium Menyanthidis) is used. These are leaves collected after the flowering of the plant with the remainder of the petiole no longer than 3 cm, dried at a temperature of 45-60 ° C. Collection is carried out from the second half of June; at earlier dates, the leaves are too juicy, darken when dried and do not meet the standards of the standard; at late harvesting, leaves with brown spots are often found.

In the leaves of the watch, flavonoids (hyperazid and rutin), bitter glycosides loganin, sverozid, menianthine, which breaks down when boiled with diluted acids into glucose and menianthol, has the smell of bitter almond water, vitamin C, tannins (3-7%), gentianine alkaloid, ascorbic acid, fatty oil, carotene and other substances, in the underground parts - saponins, tannins, traces of alkaloids, inulin, betulinic acid and other substances.

Application in medicine. Preparations from the leaves of the watch are used as bitterness to stimulate appetite and increase the secretion of the glands of the gastrointestinal tract in gastritis with low acidity, and also as a choleretic agent.

It is used to increase tone, improve the secretion of gastric juice and peristalsis of the gastrointestinal tract, with insufficient acidity of gastric juice, as well as in the treatment of liver and gallbladder diseases, tuberculosis, malaria, to excite the function of the glands, calm the nerves and with anemia. A decoction of the leaves is used to wash poorly healing wounds.

Infusion of water shamrock. A tablespoon of shamrock leaves is brewed with 200 ml of boiling water, boiled for 5 minutes, insisted for 1-2 hours, filtered, taken 1 tablespoon 3 times a day for 5-10 minutes, before meals.

Other uses. Good honey plant. Nectar productivity of 100 flowers - 22,8-33,0 mg. In areas of mass growth, it is of great importance for bees, especially in combination with other honey plants of mari and larch forests.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Tomatoes must ripen on the bush 01.03.2006

Tomatoes are often harvested while still green or slightly pink, so that they ripen during storage or transportation.

Employees of the National Institute for Agricultural Research in Avignon (France) showed that tomatoes ripened in natural conditions are not only tastier, but also healthier.

They have more vitamin C and carotenoids. But if for some reason you have to remove the fruits from the bush ahead of time, then they should not ripen in the dark, but in the light, at 18-25 degrees Celsius. Then the content of useful substances is close to normal.
