Focus Description:

The magician carefully shuffles the deck and takes out the jack of spades from it. Having shown it to the audience, the artist says that this jack is capable of transformations during the game. "If I need a king," the performer says, "I wave my right hand, close it for a moment with an open palm - and instead of a jack, I have a king in my hand."

And indeed, the jack turns into a king.

“But in our country the king is an unnecessary figure,” says the performer and again makes a movement with his right hand in the air, sliding it over the map, as if gently stroking it. Spectators see: instead of a king, the performer holds an ace in his left hand. In the process of demonstrating the trick, the performer holds the card all this time in his left hand, without taking it away for a moment from the field of view of the audience. The transformation is happening before their eyes.

Focus secret:

Props - all the same deck, from which three cards are chosen: jack, ace and king. They can be of any color. The jack and ace are cut in half horizontally. The upper part of the jack and the lower part of the ace are glued back to back (Fig. 65, A). Then the king is folded in half, also horizontally with the "picture" inside. On the upper half of the doubled king, the remaining half of the jack is glued from the "shirt" side, and on its lower half - the remaining upper half of the ace (Fig. 65, B). Thus, two secret cards were obtained.

They are connected with a small segment of the "scotch" film, aligning the king's fold line with the cut line of the main card. A king folded in half is placed on the upper part of the card with the image of a jack (Fig. 65, B). One edge of the adhesive tape is glued along the fold line of the top card, the other edge is along the connection line of the bottom main card. So, we got two cards: one lower - the main one, whole, and the other - consisting of two movable halves. All this in total looks like one card (Fig. 65, D). In order for the moving halves of the top card to fit snugly against the main bottom card during the demonstration of the trick, you need to attach them to the edges of each half of the card with two tiny spools of white plasticine.

Before demonstrating the trick, the movable halves of the secret card are lowered down, fastened together with plasticine spools - and the card takes the form of a jack. It is pre-invested in a deck lying on an illusion table.

Then the focus demonstration begins. The deck is shuffled by the performer, and a prepared jack is selected from it. The performer takes this card by the sides with two fingers of the left hand, holding it just above shoulder level. This position is most convenient for demonstrating this series of tricks. The audience sees the figure of a jack in the performer's hand. But this card does not suit the performer. He makes a soft movement in the air with his right hand, runs his open palm over the card, picks up one secret sheet (half) of the card, pressing it simultaneously to the top of the main card so that the plasticine sticks them together. And the audience sees in the hand of the performer no longer a jack, but a king (Fig. 65, E).

The performer opened the inner card folded in half with the image of the king. Now we need another card. Another movement of the right hand in the air follows, then sliding over the card - and the performer raises the second movable half of the inner card with the image of the king. Before the eyes of the audience, instead of the king, an ace appears.

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Electric explosion of aluminum foil will effectively bond the metal 13.01.2016

Metal parts are well connected by welding. However, the weld is usually the very place where the strength of the metal is less. In addition, not all metals can be welded together. For example, it is not easy to weld an aluminum body to a steel frame. And many would like this, because, say, such a car would be both lighter and less susceptible to corrosion.

Usually, spot welding is used to weld the non-weldable, melting the metal at several points: this does not form an extended seam that weakens the entire structure. But materials scientists are looking for new ways.

One of them is explosion welding. Here's what it looks like as interpreted by Glenn Dyen of Ohio University. The parts to be welded are wrapped in aluminum foil and a powerful pulse of electric current generated by a supercapacitor is passed through it. The current instantly heats the foil, and it evaporates, actually explodes. The force of the explosion is such that pieces of metal rush towards each other with great speed and are tightly connected by peculiar whirlwinds of matter.

Such an explosion consumes little energy, since there is no need to melt large amounts of metal; does not deteriorate from heating and the structure of the material in the area of the seam. The seam itself is stronger than the material next door. In this way, steel can be welded not only with steel, but also with titanium or aluminum.
