Area: Astrantia grows in temperate climates, mainly in the northern hemisphere, including Europe, Asia and North America.

Chemical composition: Astrantia contains many useful compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, phenolic compounds and other biologically active substances. Astrantia roots and leaves contain essential oils, acids, as well as calcium, potassium and other minerals.

Economic value: Astrantia is used in landscape design and gardening as an ornamental plant due to its beautiful flowers and leaves. It is used as a honey plant and honey plant for bees, as well as a food source for some insect species. In medicine, astrantia is used in traditional medicine to treat a variety of ailments such as heart and nervous system disorders, and as an anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial agent.

Legends, myths, symbolism: One of the legends connects astrantia with God, who, having created the world, gave flowers different colors and smells. Astrantia received only white color, but in response to the request of the plant, which did not want to look boring, God gave her a beautiful leaf on which is written "Deus mihi providebit" (God will provide me). Since then, this leaf has been a symbol of hope and faith. In the culture of some nations, astrantia is considered a symbol of longevity and prosperity, as well as a sign of care and attention.

Astrantia. Legends, myths, history

Elimination

A surprisingly delicate plant, as if descended from the paintings of medieval masters. Those with subtle light, conditional landscape, Madonnas with babies and lilies. Something from Hans Memling. And the name to match - Astrantia. Proudly, aristocratically, fragile and airy.

Asteros means "star" in Greek. So beautiful, and you won’t guess right away that this noble person is the sister of the banal dill. After all, astrantia belongs to the umbrella family (lat. Umbelliferae) or Celery (lat. Apiaceae), in which garden crops predominate - the same dill, celery, coriander. Astrantia is one of the few exceptions, since it performs only a decorative function. "The youngest and beloved daughter." But, by the way, abstraction is a wonderful honey plant, and next to a bush there is always fuss.

It is called differently in different countries. In Russia, it is customary to call the starfish, and in Sweden this species is called "Linnes dottrar" ("Daughters of Linnaeus"), preserving the memory of the great botanist Carl Linnaeus, who was born in Sweden.

Elimination

There is a legend about astrantia. They say that having fallen in love with an earthly youth, a star fell from the sky. Fell and scattered sparks of tiny stars, forming constellations and nebulae, white dwarfs and red giants, supernovae, pulsars and quasars.

It crumbled, but did not die. Love did not let her die. The universe, woven from love, could not get off the ground, she had neither the strength nor the desire to leave the places where the unsuspecting young man liked to walk. The star became an earthly plant, an astrantia, at the sight of which the young man began to yearn for unknown worlds and vast expanses.

As a rule, astrantia is not used in traditional medicine and cosmetology. However, in some countries it is used as an anti-inflammatory and antiseptic to treat skin problems such as eczema and acne.

Also sometimes astrantia is used as a tonic and sedative.

Before using astrantia as a medicinal plant, you should consult your doctor.

Astrantia, Astrantia, belongs to perennial herbaceous plants and is characterized by high winter hardiness.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing astrantia:

Cultivation:

  • Choose a location in partial shade or light shade, as well as fertile but well-drained soil. Astrantia does not tolerate drought, so water the plant regularly during the heat.
  • Propagate astrantia by seed or by dividing the bush in spring or autumn. Seeds can be collected in late summer - early autumn, when they are fully ripe and begin to easily separate from the plant.
  • Astrantia blooms for a long time - up to 2-3 months, but if you want to keep its flowers for as long as possible, cut them off at the dawn of opening, when the peduncles are just starting to appear. Put the flowers in a vase with cool water and change the water regularly.

Preparation and storage:

  • Astrantia can be frozen for long-term storage. To do this, clean it from leaves and peduncles, cut it into pieces and put it in a freezer bag. Store in the freezer for up to 6 months.
  • Dried astrantia flowers can be used to make fragrant teas or decorate dishes. To dry, hang the flowers on a wire hanger in a dark and cool place and let dry completely.

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Autonomous hydrogen energy source in container design for shipping 14.09.2022

HAV Hydrogen has announced a containerized energy system as a solution for ship retrofits. It is a self-contained and scalable power source based on 200 kW hydrogen fuel cell modules installed on deck.

The solution, which includes all support and safety systems, as well as power management, can be installed in a standard 20-foot 1000 kW container, according to the Norwegian system integrator of shipping fuel cell solutions. By using larger containers or by combining several containers, higher capacity energy systems are also possible.

“The on-deck container system is our answer to shipowners looking for a retrofit option that brings significantly lower costs and risks to ships that are not yet prepared for traditional below-deck installation,” explains Christian Osnes, Managing Director of HAV Hydrogen. But this solution can be used not only on existing vessels.

The installed power can be used for the main propulsion systems or an additional power source on board the ship. The net effect is calculated in such a way as to provide optimum operation without emissions in the desired operating situations, under certain driving conditions and the corresponding type of vessel. HAV Hydrogen offers support to shipowners, ship designers and shipyards to ensure an optimal design, integration and installation process.

The H2 Hydrogen containerized solution is based on the hydrogen power system developed by the FreeCO2ast project with a liquid hydrogen tank below deck. Earlier this year, the Norwegian Maritime Administration and DNV granted prior approval for the below-deck system.
