Bergamot

The rue family is Rutaceae.

A low-growing tree without thorns, with pointed evergreen leaves that have a characteristic aroma. Leaf petioles are usually equipped with very narrow wings. Flowers axillary, solitary or in few-flowered bunches, bisexual, white or purple, with a strong pleasant smell.

The fruit is a multi-celled and multi-seeded berry with a thick three-layer shell - it seems to consist of a number of easily split segments, inside of which there are a few seeds. Fruits are spherical or pear-shaped, usually devoid of seeds or with one seed.

Blooms in March - April. The fruits ripen in November - December.

Grown almost exclusively in Italy in the province of Calabria. Homeland - Southeast Asia.

Essential oil is obtained from the peel of fruits, flowers and leaves.

The yield of essential oil from the fruit peel is 1-3%. Bergamot oil is a liquid with a pleasant peculiar smell and a bitter taste.

Bergamot

The main component of bergamot oil is L-linalyl acetate (35-50%), in addition, it contains L-linalool, nerol, terpineol, citral, D-limonene, alpha-pinene, camphene, bergapten, bergaptol, P-karyo- phyllene, n-cymol, etc. The yield of essential oil from the leaves is 0,15-0,35%.

The essential oil contains citral, limonene, free and bound linalool (55%), D-alpha-terpineol (6), free and bound geraniol and nerol (6), sesquiterpene alcohols (0,3%), methyl anthranilate. The specific pleasant aroma of the oil is due to the presence of linalyl acetate and free linalool.

Essential oil from the peel of fruits and flowers is used in the confectionery industry, as well as in perfumery and microscopic technology.

Bergamot oil is used for fragrance ointments and in perfumery. The furocoumarins contained in it have a strong photosensitizing effect, promote faster skin pigmentation.

In medicine, based on one of the components - bergapten - drugs have been created for the treatment of vitiligo and nested baldness.

cultivated and wild plants. Legends, myths, symbolism, description, cultivation, methods of application

Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) is a tree native to Southern Italy. It is known for its fragrant fruits, which are used to produce bergamot essential oil.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing bergamot:

Cultivation:

  • Soil and Light: Bergamot needs full sun and grows in well-drained, fertile soils with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. A good choice for soil is a mixture of sand, humus and peat.
  • Planting and Depth: Bergamot should be planted in spring or fall. The planting depth should be the same as the potted plant you bought it in. The distance between plants should be at least 3-4 meters.
  • Plant care: Bergamot needs regular watering, especially during periods of heat and drought. In addition, the plant needs to be fed with organic and mineral fertilizers in spring and summer. It is also a good idea to prune the plant regularly to keep it in good shape and remove dead branches.

Workpiece:

  • Bergamot fruits are harvested at the end of winter and at the beginning of spring, when they are not yet fully ripe.
  • The fruits can be used to make essential oils, as well as in cooking, for making jams, marmalades and other confectionery.
  • Before use, the fruits should be washed and dried.

Storage:

  • Bergamot essential oil should be stored in a sealed dark bottle in a cool place.
  • Fruits can be stored in the refrigerator for several days or frozen for longer storage.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

acoustic levitator 09.07.2022

An international team of scientists from the UK and Brazil created the LeviPrint acoustic levitation system. It generates fields that "catch" drops and small objects and allow them to be controlled in space.

According to the developers, LeviPrint is a full-featured system for non-contact production of three-dimensional objects.

It will simplify the process of 3D printing due to the built-in glue dispenser and the fact that the elements do not get dirty, as they do not come into contact with surfaces. In addition, acoustic fields can pass through fabric, meshes and other materials.
