Safe Operation

1. General requirements for labor protection

Excavation work should be mechanized as much as possible. If it is impossible to use mechanisms, it is allowed to excavate the soil manually. Excavation work is carried out in accordance with the work plan, which determines their sequence and order.

In the area where underground communications are located (electric cables, gas and water pipelines, etc.), excavation work is permitted only with the written permission of the organization responsible for their operation. The permit is accompanied by a plan (diagram) indicating the location and depth of communications, drawn up on the basis of as-built drawings.

When approaching communication lines, excavation work is carried out under the supervision of the work contractor, and in the immediate vicinity under the supervision of employees of the organization that is responsible for their operation.

Excavation of soil in the immediate vicinity of existing underground communications is allowed only with the help of shovels, without sharp blows; the use of impact tools (crowbars, picks, wedges, pneumatic tools, etc.) is prohibited.

Persons at least 18 years of age who have been instructed in labor safety and have mastered practical skills for safe work are allowed to carry out earthworks.

At night, the work site must be illuminated and surrounded by protective barriers. While performing excavation work, the worker must be dressed in proper overalls and safety shoes.

2. Safety requirements before starting work

Before starting work, it is necessary to prepare and check the tool. The shovel must be tightly packed onto the holder and secured with a screw (nail). The holder must be made of hard and tough wood (maple, oak, elm, etc.), the surface of which must be smooth, without burrs, splits or knots. The blade of the shovel must be sharply sharpened.

Before starting work, you must make sure that there is permission for its production.

3. Safety requirements during work

When performing work, you must pay attention to the depth limitation. Digging a trench: with vertical walls without fastening and in the absence of underground communications near a depth of no more than:

  • 1 m in bulk, sandy and gravel soils;
  • 1,5 m in clay soils;
  • 2 m in particularly dense soils that require the use of crowbars, picks, and wedges for development.

Under other different conditions, the vertical walls should be secured with boards, which are laid behind vertical posts, close to the ground and reinforced with spacers.

Dismantling of plank fastenings of pits and trenches should be done in the direction of the ground.

Pit pits and trenches developed in the winter without fastening and with fastenings, the onset of a thaw, after prolonged precipitation are subject to inspection and, if necessary, additional fastening.

Before digging the earth, you must take a stable position to prevent your feet from slipping: you must press down on the shovel with the sole of your shoe from the shovel and lose balance.

The blade of the shovel should be placed at a safe distance from the feet, avoiding hitting it with hard objects (metal, stones, reinforced concrete structures, etc.) because In this case, the shovel may fall off and cause injury.

It is impossible to clean the shovel from the ground by hitting hard objects.

The distance between workers must be at least 2 m, the excavated soil must be removed at a distance of at least 0,5 m from the edge of the trench or pit.

To avoid a collapse, you cannot select soil by digging and be in trenches: pits during excavations with excavators and other mechanisms.

4. Safety requirements after completion of work

After completing the excavation work, it is necessary to tidy up the workplace and clean the tools.

Remove and clean overalls and safety shoes, and wash your face and hands with warm water and soap. Inform the manager about the completion of the work, as well as about any problems and what measures have been taken to correct them.

5. Safety requirements in case of emergencies

If, during excavation work, unknown objects are discovered that are not indicated in the plans and diagram of underground communications, it is necessary to immediately stop the work: inform the work manager about this. Work is permitted to continue only after the nature of communications has been clarified and the appropriate permission has been obtained.

If explosive materials and ammunition are found, proceed to work only after they have been removed by sappers.

When harmful gases appear, work is stopped and people are removed from the work site to a safe distance.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Black holes helped solve the problem of batteries 06.07.2012

In the laboratory of the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics in Potsdam, for the first time, the existence of magnetic instability was confirmed, which can help create capacious long-lasting batteries and answer some questions about the structure of the universe.

Magnetic instabilities play a decisive role in the appearance of black holes, they regulate the rotation speed of collapsing stars and influence the behavior of powerful jets of matter, the so-called jets. In essence, magnetic instability is a change in the magnetic structure of a substance that tends to a stable thermodynamic equilibrium. Magnetic instability occurs when a strong current passes through an electrically conductive liquid. Starting from a certain current strength, its interaction with its own magnetic field creates vortex fluid flows. Similar structures can be observed in the form of huge jets in space.

Astrophysicists believe that one of the possible manifestations of magnetic instability is the "strange" behavior of neutron stars, which rotate much more slowly than theories predict. Scientists attribute the mysterious braking effect of neutron stars to the influence of magnetic instability, which reduces the rotation speed from a theoretical 1000 revolutions per second to about 10-100 revolutions per second.

The study of German scientists can help not only unravel the mysteries of astrophysics, but also create large liquid metal batteries that will pave the way for renewable energy sources.

Scientists believe that the phenomenon of magnetic instability can also be used on Earth, in particular in advanced batteries. The researchers came to the conclusion that, starting from reaching a certain current strength, powerful liquid flows can occur in liquid metal batteries, leading to a short circuit. During the experiment, magnetic instability in a liquid alloy (indium, gallium and tin) was obtained at room temperature and a current strength of 8000 amperes. Thus, scientists were able to discover a way to prevent the destruction of liquid metal batteries and increase their capacity. To do this, it is proposed to use large batteries and conductive tubes that will drain the reverse current.
