Artificial fertilizers are much more effective if they are applied to the soil dissolved in water. However, it is not easy to achieve their uniform distribution over the area of the site - after all, most of the granules do not dissolve well and fall out in the form of sediment to the bottom of a bucket or watering can.

To get rid of this shortcoming, I propose to make a simple device - a dispenser that allows you to use undiluted granular fertilizers. The device is a thin-walled pipe with an internal Ø 15 mm. A feeding container is attached to it at one end, and a kind of syringe for "injecting" fertilizers into the soil at the other. The feeding container can be loaded not only with granules in its pure form, but also mixed with seeds (whose dimensions do not exceed 2 mm): in this way, it is possible to perform combined work - sowing together with top dressing.

The main elements of the dispenser, including pipe 5 (see figure), can be made of tin or sheet steel with a thickness of 0,75 ... 1 mm. The main working pair of the device - the feed cone 2 and the rocker arm 12 - are soldered, pivotally connected to each other with an M3 bolt. The nozzle of the feed cone is an ellipse. The feed is controlled by pulling the cord 10 by the ring 9. The rocker closes the nozzle under the action of the spring 11, twisted from a millimetric wire and having a diameter of 20 mm. The shank of the rocker arm can be equipped with an additional conical plug-valve, adjusted in size to the nozzle section.

The operating experience of the dispenser has shown that it greatly facilitates the work in comparison with the manual application of granular fertilizers. Now the work can be done without leaning over each bush or hole. It is most convenient to hold the dispenser with the left hand by the neck of the container, and with the right hand by the handle-holder so that the index finger enters the ring 9. The amount of the fertilizer portion is determined by the opening time of the cone nozzle 2; if you need an accurate dosage of fertilizers, use a transparent container, putting risks on it.

In conclusion, it must be added that the applied fertilizers, sand or seeds should be carefully sifted through a sieve to avoid clogging the nozzle. And one more piece of advice: if there is a need to process a large area, then it is advisable to have several supply containers with pre-prepared granules.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

blue blood horseshoe crab 17.08.2012

Horseshoe crabs are large (60-90 centimeters long) marine animals that live off the coast of North America and Southeast Asia. These relatives of extinct trilobites and now living spiders look like crabs.

Already about half a century ago, biologists discovered that the bluish blood of the horseshoe crab coagulates upon contact with any microorganisms, even dead ones. This is a way to protect against diseases, primitive immunity. Five American pharmaceutical companies have launched a drug based on horseshoe crab blood that detects the slightest microbial contamination in injection drugs and on any medical instruments. When the horseshoe crabs come out to spawn in shallow water once a year, large individuals are collected, taken to the laboratory, and about half a cup of blood is taken from each through a hollow needle. It does not harm animals. Then they are returned to the sea 110-130 kilometers from the place of capture, so as not to catch the same "donors" all the time.

The collected blood is dried in vacuum, obtaining a white powder, which, after dilution in distilled water, is used to control the purity of medical preparations and devices. Two doses of this powder are included in the International Space Station first aid kit.
