What do the sounds of yo-ho-ho in the pirate song from the novel Treasure Island mean?

A famous song from Stevenson's novel Treasure Island sings: "Fifteen men for a dead man's chest. Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!" It is logical to assume that "yo-ho-ho" is the laughter of pirates, but this is not so. Such an exclamation was used by English sailors when they needed to simultaneously make efforts in some kind of work - in Russian it corresponds to the phrase "one, two, they took it!".

Watching what movie inspired physicists to new scientific publications about black holes?

Physicist Kip Thorne was the scientific adviser to the writers of Interstellar. To realistically visualize a spinning supermassive black hole and the gravitational lens it forms, Thorne wrote many pages of theory. The resulting rendering, in turn, inspired Thorne with new ideas about gravitational lenses and accretion disks, leading him and his colleagues to publish three new scientific papers.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Plankton in amber 05.07.2009

In amber, insects, arachnids, centipedes, and other small inhabitants of coniferous forests are usually found, where these animals could get into a drop of tree resin and freeze in it forever.

Recently, in the west of France, several pieces of amber 98-100 million years old (mid-Cretaceous) were found with inclusions of marine plankton samples. Under a microscope, biologists saw diatoms in amber and some unicellular animals typical of plankton - radiolarians and foraminifers.

It is believed that pines or other coniferous trees grew near the seashore and during a storm, waves with plankton could splash up to the trunks, along which resin flowed.
