What is solar activity?

Every 11 years (the last time in June 2000) a series of flares is observed on the surface of the Sun, radiation from a stream of particles, etc., in which billions of tons of matter heated to a temperature of 4500 ° are ejected into the surrounding space. These processes affect geomagnetic activity, disrupt radio communications, etc.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Which household appliance was first advertised for the idea of a hair dryer?

The idea of a hair care device first appeared in an advertisement for a "Pneumatic" vacuum cleaner produced by an American firm in the early twentieth century.

The advertisement showed a lady sitting at a dressing table and drying her hair with a stream of air from the "exhaust" pipe of a vacuum cleaner. The text said that not a drop of energy is wasted in a vacuum cleaner: while the front end of the apparatus sucks up dust, the clean, motor-heated air coming out of the other end of the device can be used to dry hair.

It is not known how many buyers of "Pnevmatik" took advantage of this advice, but the idea was to attract the attention of specialists.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Fast and flexible electrical circuits for wearable electronics 04.06.2016

Engineers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA) have created an electrical circuit with the maximum flexibility and speed to date, which is necessary for the development of wearable electronics and the Internet of things.

The prototype consists of two very thin intertwining S-shaped conductive lines. This shape allows stretching without loss of electrical conductive properties. At the same time, the circuit is protected from external interference. At the moment, the circuit can operate in the radio frequency range up to 40 GHz.

In this case, unlike other flexible transmission lines, which are up to 0,64 mm wide, the new development can have a width of only 0,025 mm. Such dimensions make it possible to effectively use it, in particular, in the creation of epidermal electronic systems - in devices that read indicators from the skin surface.
