20nm chips manufactured by TSMC 18.12.2013

Xilinx announced the start of shipments of its first 20nm chips in early November 2013, continuing its aggressive promotion of UltraScale architecture products.

"The new devices manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) using the 20nm process are built on a programmable ASIC architecture and are complemented by the Xilinx Vivado ASIC-strength development kit and UltraFast design methodology," said Tang Liren, Executive director of the Asia-Pacific division of Xilinx.

"The new offerings expand the Kintex and Virtex FPGA lines and Xilinx's 3D IC families based on the UltraScale architecture and TSMC's CoWos (chip-on-wafer-on-substrate) technology with high gate density," Tan said, adding, "new portfolios may become alternative solutions for other ASIC (Application IC) and ASSP (Standard Application IC) devices."

"Xilinx has no plans to approach new vendors and looks forward to continuing the business partnership with TSMC, extending the collaboration from 28nm to 20nm and 16nm FinFET," Tan said.
