Where does Veronica's hair come from in the sky?

The ancient constellation Leo had a rather large "territory" in the sky, and Leo himself was the owner of a magnificent tassel on his tail. But in 243 BC, he lost it. There was a funny story about which the following legend says.

The Egyptian king Ptolemy Everget had a beautiful wife, Queen Veronica (or Berenice). Especially magnificent were her luxurious long hair. When Ptolemy went to war, his saddened wife swore an oath to the gods: if they keep her beloved husband safe and sound, she will sacrifice her hair.

Soon Ptolemy returned home safely, but when he saw his shorn wife, he was upset. The royal couple was somewhat reassured by the astronomer Konon, declaring that the gods lifted Veronica's hair to heaven, where they are destined to decorate spring nights forever.

The Leo constellation has shrunk by a few stars, but a new constellation has appeared: Veronica's Hair. It can be seen first with the naked eye and then with binoculars. A large group of faint stars resembles a school of flying cranes. Powerful telescopes detect inside and outside this "jamb" a whole cloud of galaxies - about a thousand star systems.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What fruits grew on the biblical tree of the knowledge of good and evil?

The forbidden fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, which Adam and Eve tasted and were expelled from paradise for it, is not specified in any text of the Bible. In the Western Christian tradition, it is usually considered an apple - perhaps because of the consonance of the Latin words malum ("evil") and malum ("apple"). But interpreters of the Bible offer other candidates for the role of the forbidden fruit - for example, grapes, pomegranates or figs. The latter option is justified by the fact that after eating the fruit, Adam and Eve covered their nakedness with the leaves of a fig tree.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

The benefits of sleeping during work hours 16.08.2002

A study on sleep during working hours was carried out by physiologists from Harvard University.

A group of 30 volunteers were asked four times a day - at 9 am, at noon, at 4 and 7 pm - to find an inconspicuous detail in a drawing on a computer screen, the position of which changed each time. Ten test subjects did not sleep all day, and by the evening the detection of the desired part had slowed down by 52 percent. The other ten were allowed to sleep for half an hour at two in the afternoon. Their reaction time did not increase in the evening. Ten more slept in the middle of the day for an hour - their results improved by the evening.

A dozen more volunteers were invited, they were not allowed to sleep, but simply to rest. It did nothing to increase their vigilance. Scientists have found a theoretical explanation for such results. Our ancestors, primates, inhabitants of hot tropical countries, are mainly crepuscular animals, they are especially active at dusk, in the evening and in the early morning. And in the middle of the day, at the hottest time, they sleep under the canopy of dense crowns.

So, demand from your superiors to start a dormitory at work and increase the lunch break by an hour.
