What is a satellite?

In astronomy, a satellite is a body that revolves around a larger body and is held by its force of attraction. The Moon is the Earth's satellite. Earth is a satellite of the Sun. When we use the word "satellite" we usually mean a man-made spacecraft orbiting the earth.

Artificial satellites are sent into space with various purposes. Some are used for scientific research, others collect information for weather forecasting. Some satellites have television and radio antennas. Satellites can be used in navigation and cartography.

Man-made satellites give scientists an idea of the state of living organisms in outer space. Satellites can be of any size, from a small container with tools to a huge balloon, reaching 30 meters in diameter. They can weigh from a few kilograms to many tons. Their shape can be the most diverse: round, like a ball, hat-shaped, reminiscent of a tin box, a bell, a cigarette.

Satellites are launched at speeds of 30 km/h or more. If no other forces acted on the satellite after the launch, it would fly far into outer space. But the direct flight cannot continue, because the Earth's gravity acts on the satellite, and it begins to move in orbit around the Earth. So the satellite goes into orbit.

The orbit of some satellites is at a distance of 177 km from the Earth, for others no more than 35 km. The orbit is chosen by scientists in advance, taking into account the tasks that are assigned to the satellite.

Hydrofoil Electric Taxi Candela P-12 07.06.2021

Swedish premium electric boat manufacturer Candela has unveiled the new Candela P-12 electric hydrofoil water taxi.

Designed to replace traditional diesel-powered models, the 8,5-meter vehicle uses a combination of an electric motor, a carbon-fiber-reinforced composite hull and hydrofoils. The cabin with panoramic windows has seats for 12 passengers.

The hydrofoil system chosen for the P-12 has already been tested on the Candela C-7 luxury pleasure boat. The patented proprietary control system ensures the smoothest possible ride, eliminating the occurrence of seasickness.

The advantages of the novelty include less energy consumption, less noise, smoother movement and significantly less environmental impact. The latter factor allows you to move at high speed in areas where conventional boats have to slow down so as not to harm wildlife.

The Candela P-12 can travel at 30 knots (55 km/h) and has an autonomy of over 2 hours at 20 knots (37 km/h). A standard DC fast charger can fully charge the battery in just an hour.

According to Candela's calculations, the P-12 consumes 80% less energy than conventional water taxis with an internal combustion engine. This means that even in markets where fossil fuels are subsidized, the P-12 will be significantly cheaper to operate than comparable combustion-engined ships.
