Microsoft is blocking the installation of Linux on its tablets

21.01.2012

Microsoft's special requirement almost completely excludes the possibility of installing third-party operating systems on ARM tablets, including Android, based on the Linux kernel.

Microsoft's requirements for manufacturers of ARM-based tablets that choose to install the Windows 8 operating system include a clause requiring them to use UEFI boot technology. It must be activated without the possibility of manual shutdown (transfer to Custom Mode). This requirement has an interesting consequence: it will significantly complicate the installation of third-party operating systems, writes Digital Trends.

According to Steven Sinofsky, president of Microsoft's Windows and Windows Live division, this measure is aimed at protecting users from unauthorized interference with the firmware - when a malicious application can change the boot algorithm and place malicious code in memory before the OS starts.
A feature of UEFI is that this technology does not allow running operating systems on the device that do not have digital signatures in the factory firmware. Thus, if the manufacturer adds a digital signature only to Windows 8, then only this operating system will run on the tablet.

If the user wants to install an operating system on the Linux kernel, he will have to manually intervene in the firmware to add the signature. This is a complex procedure that not many will be able to do. If the manufacturer adds additional signatures on its own, Microsoft

Microsoft is trying to reduce competitive pressure from ARM tablets running Google's Android operating system. Currently, ARM devices occupy almost the entire global tablet market, and the vast majority of them work on Android or iOS operating systems, with the almost complete absence of Windows OS on the market. It can be assumed that Microsoft introduced a restriction on digital signatures in UEFI to prevent vendors and users from installing alternative operating systems on tablets designed for Windows 8 and sold with its logo. It is noteworthy that claims from the antimonopoly authorities regarding the requirements of Microsoft are unlikely to appear, just for the reason that it is almost absent on the market.

The story of UEFI blocking at the request of Microsoft did not begin today. Back in September 2011, representatives of Linux distributors sounded the alarm due to the fact that running third-party operating systems on computers with this technology would be very difficult. Within a month, they prepared a document with recommendations on how to organize the boot process at the system level, and in December the corporation canceled the mandatory condition according to which UEFI technology could not be disabled. However, this only applied to devices with x86 processors.

Thus, buyers of a modern Windows 8 tablet with long battery life and a Metro interface will find themselves in the same position as iPad owners: they will only be able to use the pre-installed operating system.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>
