Macochok yellow (glaucium yellow)

Annual, biennial or perennial herbaceous plant of the poppy family (Papaveraceae).

The leaves are alternate, thick, gray in color.

Does not grow under natural conditions.

Range and habitats. In nature, the range of the species covers the sea coasts of Europe, Asia Minor and North Africa. It is cultivated in the North Caucasus and in the south of Kazakhstan.

Grows on rocky slopes, rarely on sands.

Chemical composition. Medicinal raw material is the aerial part, which contains more than 10 alkaloids. The grass of the yellow machka contains up to 3,9% of the total alkaloids, including 1,7-1,9% of glaucine.

In addition to glaucine, the machka contains aurotensin, D-coridin, isocoridine, L-xelidonin, allocryptonin, helirubin, sanguinarine, chelerythrin.

Application in medicine. Glaucine is used as an antitussive in diseases of the lungs and upper respiratory tract (pneumonia, bronchopneumonia, chronic bronchitis with pulmonary emphysema, bronchiectasis, etc.).

In connection with adrenolytic properties, glaucine may have a hypotensive effect.

In folk medicine, it is used as a diuretic, as well as for abscesses and bruises.

Ethnoscience:

  • For joint pain: crush the rhizome of the yellow machka and insist it in alcohol for several days. Then apply to the affected joint and cover with a heating pad.
  • From liver diseases: prepare an infusion from the rhizome of mach yellow and drink 1 glass a day.
  • For headaches: crush the leaves of machka yellow and apply on the forehead. You can also drink an infusion of the leaves inside.
  • From cough: prepare an infusion from the rhizome of mach yellow and drink 1 glass a day.
  • For rheumatism: chop the rhizome of yellow machka and mix with olive oil. Apply to the affected joint and cover with a heating pad.

Cosmetology:

Contact with mach yellow juice can cause irritation and burns on the skin, so it is recommended to avoid its use for cosmetic purposes.

Machok yellow, or glaucium yellow, or Glaucium flavum, is a perennial plant that grows in Mediterranean regions. This plant is used in landscape design and traditional medicine.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing yellow machka:

  • Choice of soil and illumination: The yellow flower prefers a sunny place. It can grow in different types of soil, but prefers light and well-drained soil.
  • Landing: Choose a landing site that is in a sunny position. Dig a hole about 30 cm deep and 30-40 cm wide. Before planting, add organic fertilizer and mix it into the soil.
  • Depth and distance between plants: Plant the plants at a depth of about 5-10 cm and at a distance of about 30-40 cm from each other.
  • Plant care: The yellow flower needs regular watering, especially during a period of severe drought. It also needs regular feeding and pruning.
