Why does the moon glow?

In ancient times, people considered the moon to be the goddess - the patroness of the night. Since then, man has learned a lot about its true nature and even visited it. Science has managed to solve many mysteries related to this only natural satellite of the earth. One of these mysteries, which has long ceased to be a legend, is moonlight. The Moon, unlike the stars, including the Sun, does not emit constant light, but it can reflect someone else's. Therefore, moonlight is just the sun's rays reflected from the surface of the moon.

You may have heard the expression dark side of the moon. It does not mean at all that some part of the lunar surface cannot reflect light. It's just that the moon rotates around its axis with the same speed with which it makes a complete revolution around the Earth, and therefore it always faces the same side towards it. However, now the images of the far side of the Moon, received from satellites, were seen on the screens of their televisions by people in many countries.

There is no layer of atmosphere around the Moon, and this leads to very curious phenomena. Thus, the temperature of the lunar surface, illuminated for 14 days by the Sun, rises above the boiling point of water. For the next 14 days, it drops sharply, because in the absence of heating due to sunlight and an atmosphere capable of retaining heat near the surface, the latter cools very quickly.

The Earth illuminates the Moon with the reflected light of the Sun, but this does not help to slightly increase the temperature of the "lunar night", which is approximately -200 ° C.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Found the key to the working memory of the brain 18.10.2020

Working memory - the ability to keep thoughts in mind even when distracted - is the basis of abstract reasoning and a defining characteristic of the human brain. It is seriously disturbed in disorders such as schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease, but sometimes it can fail a healthy person.

American researchers at Yale University have discovered a key molecule that helps neurons retain information in working memory, potentially leading to a treatment for neurocognitive disorders, according to the journal Neuron.

Working memory arises from neural circuits in the prefrontal cortex. Neurons encourage each other to keep information "in memory". These diagrams act as a kind of mental notepad, allowing us to remember that onions are being cooked in a pan in the kitchen while we are looking for scissors in another room.

The new study shows that these prefrontal cortical circuits are dependent on the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which stimulates M1 muscarinic receptors located on the surface of neurons in the prefrontal cortex. Blocking these receptors reduces the activity of neurons involved in working memory, while activation of the M1 receptors helps restore their activity. Since the action of acetylcholine on M1 receptors is reduced in schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease, the M1 receptor may serve as a potential therapeutic target, the authors of the scientific work say.

A drug for the treatment of schizophrenia is currently being developed that stimulates this M1 receptor. It has already shown promising results in early clinical trials.
