What is foot-and-mouth disease?

If you live on a farm or have something to do with animal husbandry, then you have probably heard talk about foot and mouth disease.

It is a highly contagious disease that affects almost all artiodactyl cattle. When an animal becomes ill with foot-and-mouth disease, blisters appear on its tongue, lips, and around the mouth. They can be seen on those parts of the skin where the skin is thin, as well as between the hooves. The disease appears suddenly and spreads very quickly. It causes huge loss of livestock.

If this disease takes serious forms, up to half of the infected animals can die from it. Yes, and those that survive, have a lot of problems. They lose a lot of weight because they can't eat. The milk yield of cows is also significantly reduced. By the way, a horse does not get sick with foot-and-mouth disease. This helps to establish a diagnosis. Suppose that horses, cows and pigs have a temperature on a farm. Then we can definitely say that it is not foot and mouth disease. But if the temperature rises in all animals except horses, then we can say for sure that this is foot and mouth disease.

The disease is caused by a virus, with which considerable problems are associated. First, it is the smallest of all known viruses. By comparison, the smallpox virus is 10 times larger. Another problem is that the virus can resist attempts to destroy it if the living conditions are right for it. In hay, this virus can remain active for 000 days. And at freezing temperatures, it can remain active for 30 days!

In addition, it is able to withstand many antiseptics. Another difficulty is that there are six types of FMD viruses. Therefore, even if an animal develops immunity against one species, the disease can be caused by viruses of the other five!

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Cats watch their owners without even seeing them 06.12.2023

Scientists in Japan have conducted a surprising experiment revealing that cats have a unique ability to track the location of their owners, even when they are out of sight. During the scientific work, 23 cats and 27 felines were subjected to careful analysis, revealing the unexpected cognitive abilities of these mysterious animals.

The experiment expands our understanding of cats' cognitive abilities and highlights the depth of the bond between these enigmatic pets and their owners. Tracking the location of owners without visual contact highlights surprising aspects of feline intelligence and creates new horizons for future research in behavioral biology.

27 cats who lived in the cat cafe and the scientists’ pets took part in an experiment in which recordings of the owners’ voices were used. Surprisingly, the cats showed a special reaction, even from different corners of the room, when they heard their name. These results support the scientists' hypothesis that cats have a unique bond with their owners, based not on appearance, but on the sound of their voice.

The new study also revealed interesting details: cats reacted with confusion when their owner's voice "moved" from one part of the room to another. These observations indicate that cats not only have developed personalities, but also amazing cognitive abilities, still underestimated by science.
