How many types of palm trees are there? Detailed answer Directory / Big encyclopedia. Questions for quiz and self-education Did you know? How many types of palm trees are there? Many of us consider the palm tree to be a purely ornamental tree. We have seen in pictures how these majestic trees line the streets in some cities or grow near tropical beaches. In fact, there are about four thousand different types of palm trees, among which there are trees that bring great benefits to humans. Their fruits, trunks and tender leaves provide a person with food. Leaves, branches, trunks are used to obtain strong wood, the manufacture of canes, roofing and ropes. The bark and leaves are used to make mats, paper, cloth, baskets, hats, and brushes. Buttons are cut from elephant palm nuts. The sap of some palm trees is processed into sugar, wine or honey. Most palms are the same shape. They have straight, thin trunks without branches with a bunch of leaves at the top. Others have branching trunks, and at least one of them is a climbing vine. In height, they reach from a few centimeters to 23 meters. All palm trees are united by the fact that their leaves resemble a palm. Shiny, dense leaves resemble a fan or feather in shape. Their sizes range from a few centimeters to 3 meters wide and 9 meters long. Their fruits can be the size of a pea or reach the size of a soccer ball, like a coconut tree. They can be soft, like a date palm, or have a woody shell. Palm trees grow in the southern United States, Mexico, South America, Asia, Africa and southern Europe. On the tropical islands of the Pacific Ocean, palm trees grow everywhere. Some types of palm trees grow in the dry sands of the desert, others require fertile, moist soil. Although palm trees mainly grow in the tropics, there is one species that is found at an altitude of 3960 meters in the northern Andes! Among the wide variety of palms are oil palm, sago palm, palmyra palm, cabbage palm (grows in Australia), button palm, petal palm and coconut palm. Raffia for making baskets is obtained from the Malagasy palm tree. Author: Likum A. Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia: Where did the British fight the French during World War II? After the armistice between France and Germany in 1940, Great Britain feared that the French fleet would fall under the control of the Germans, which could radically change the balance of power in the maritime theater of operations. On July 3, the British formation "H" approached the base of Mers-el-Kebir in Algiers, where part of the French Atlantic squadron had already begun to demobilize, and put forward an ultimatum. Among the options offered was to join the British fleet, either sail to American ports or simply scuttle the ships, but the French chose to take the fight. As a result, their losses amounted to about 1300 people and several ships, while the British lost only two pilots. In the future, the French sailors did not allow the transfer of the fleet to the Germans - for example, in 1942 they sank 77 ships while trying to capture them in the port of Toulon.
