Where did the vote come from?

The right to vote during political elections is called the "right to vote". Thanks to him, you can choose people for public office, as well as approve or reject laws that are presented for public discussion.

In the history of mankind, the right to vote has existed most often for a specially selected group of people. The right of every person to elect and be elected is a full democracy, but even today this right is not always and everywhere respected. At all times there were certain restrictions! Some of them were legitimate, others were unfair. But at different times in different countries there were restrictions that concerned the age of a person, his gender, religion, skin color, education, material and social status, as well as the payment of taxes.

In ancient Greece and ancient Rome, there were sprouts of democracy. There was also a primitive form of voting. At general meetings in Athens, for example, people raised their hands when questions touched on social issues. When it came to people, secret ballots were used. People, for example, could dismiss a person who fell out of favor. Only free citizens had the right to vote. Slaves and foreigners had no voting rights, and a foreigner had no chance of becoming a citizen.

During the Middle Ages, citizens and free citizens in large cities had the right to choose a mayor. But the right to vote had property restrictions. In the Renaissance, the people were ruled by the aristocracy: the common people did not have the right to vote.

When the first entrepreneurs appeared in Europe, with the development of trade and industry, the right to vote extended to them. Restrictions that related to the age and other characteristics of a person given to him from birth were replaced by restrictions that related to his financial situation. Neither the American nor the French revolutions resulted in the privileged groups of people sharing their right to vote with the common people.

Now every person in the UK who has reached the age of 18 has the right to vote (with the exception of peers, insane and criminals). Before 1832, only a very few people in Great Britain had this right. And women were not allowed to vote until 1918. Then, women who have reached 30 years of age were allowed to this procedure. And in 1928, all the British received the right to vote.

The reform of 1832 abolished the existing voting system and gave the right to vote to all men who owned land (whether landowner or tenant) worth at least 10 pounds.

And in 1867, a second reform took place, giving the right to vote to artisans and city workers. And after 1884, peasants began to enjoy the right to vote. Now everyone has the right to vote.

At the beginning of the last century, the owner of the land had the right to appoint his own candidate for parliament from the so-called "constituency". But sometimes no one lived in such districts, as was the case in the district of Old Sarum in Wiltshire; or the earth became the bottom of an artificial sea, as happened in Dunwich County in Suffolk. Before 1832, only a small number of members of Parliament were elected by popular vote.

Today, each candidate must present £500. If he does not get 5% of the votes, he will give this money as a fine. Until 1949, a person who lived in one city and did business in another county could vote in both counties. Thus, a university graduate could vote for local candidates, as well as for candidates representing his university.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

How are the Mexican pyramids different from the Egyptian ones?

If the Egyptian pyramids are, in fact, huge tombstones, then the Mexican pyramids are grandiose stands for temples, where majestic actions were played out. Long stone stairs lead to them.

The Mexican pyramids are not inferior in their pomposity to the Egyptian ones. True, in height they lose. Even the main pyramid of Tenochtitlan does not exceed 30 meters, that is, five times lower than the pyramid of Cheops.

To this day, scientists have not exactly established who exactly erected these pyramids - the Aztecs themselves or some other, earlier civilization.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. chicken broth for hypertension 17.07.2009

Physiologists from the University of Hiroshima (Japan) found that chicken broth lowers blood pressure. Moreover, for the healing effect of the broth, it is desirable to cook not white meat, but either the whole chicken, or legs and paws.

It turned out that these parts, rich in veins and cartilage, contain peptides (proteins with a short chain of amino acids) that can inhibit the action of a hormone that constricts blood vessels and thereby increases blood pressure.

However, for those who do not like chicken broth, according to the authors of the work, wheat, soybeans, salmon and sour milk, which contain similar substances, can also help.
